Program cannot find DirectX

Starting last week, my programs can no longer "see" DirectX on my computer.
They report "DirectX not installed." I've tried re-installing the latest
version of DirectX 9.0c, rebooted, but still have the same problem.

Is there something in the registry that's messed up or a service that isn't
starting? Anyone know how to troubleshoot this?

What does the DX diagnostic tool report, ok or what..?
Type msinfo32 in the run box, in system info click tools, DX diagnostic tool..
Have you tried reinstalling or repairing the game(s) from their setup disks
or from add remove programs..? Usually if using the latter you click
change/remove and should be given 3 options, modify, repair or uninstall..
Cheers

I've done all (and more) that I can think of:
1. Uninstall/re-install program
2. uninstall then manually deleting ALL entries in registry. reboot.
Re-iinstall.
3. re-installed DirectX 9.0c
4. re-installed version 1 and 2 of the .NET Framework (just a swing in the
dark -- but only programs that need the internet seem to be effected.)
5. Ran SFC. Discovered some essential XP system files were missing.
Re-installed and registered all .dlls
6. Deleted the device from Device Manager, reboot, re-install.
7. Tried using another DVD drive.
8. check resources for any ISA conflicts (memory, IRQ, etc.)

and finally
9. Used 'scare tactics.' Picked up a 2.5 lb sledge hammer and threatened the
PC with death if it didn't start obeying orders in a very loud voice. (hey,
when you're stumped, you'll try anything :D)

Wow, sounds like major surgery there Doc.. :)
You don't mention [unless it's included in (and more)] trying a system
restore to an earlier date, say two weeks prior from when the problem first
started.. Do you keep registry backups..?

Might need to do a repair install of XP now, hopefully you have the XP
retail version, is that an option for you..?

Please don't hurt me, just trying to help..;D

One of my problems was that all my System Restore points were deleted.

I finally downloaded and re-installed SP2. Now everything works fine.

NOTE TO ALL -- DO NOT TRY ANY "FREE TRIAL" OF ANY XP TWEAK PROGRAM ON THE
MARKET. DANGER OF THEM DOING VERY DAMAGING THINGS TO YOUR REGISTRY AND
OPERATING SYSTEM.

Glad to here that you were able to fix your own mistake, in a sense.. Your
advice to the group indicates (echoes loudly around the world) you have
learned a valuable lesson..
Game on..
