Profiling printer with VUESCAN

I tried to profile my printer with VUESCAN but keep getting a message "IT8
error". I wonder if anyone in this news group had had a similar experience
or, more to the point, has been successful.

I was successful using VUESCAN to scan my scanner; that worked very well.
I've profiled my monitor with Profile Mechanic - worked very well. I now
have this one remaining problem to accomplish complete profiling of my
system.

Thank you.

Adolph: I really don't know why Ed Hamrick includs a printer
"profiling" feature in VueScan. The printer profile VueScan generates
is not a real printer profile, but rather a monitor or colorspace
profile that specifies only the RGB primaries and gammas and the white
point. Typical printer profiles also include color lookup tables
(CLUTS) that are used to correct the colors sent to your printer so
they reasonably match what you see on your calibrated and profiled
monitor. Without the CLUTs the printer profiles generated by VueScan
are useless in my opinion.

The best way to profile your printer is to have a professional profile
made -- they are not cheap $40 to $100+, but usually worth it. Also
there are several software solutions that use your scanner as a
colorimeter or spectrophotometer to read an IT8 chart. These can give
OK to good results, but typically the results are variable.

Seeing that you are a Profile Mechanic user as I am (both PM-S and
PM-M), check the DL-C forum for the name of an inexpensive profiling
service that Jonathan recommends (sorry I can't remember the name right
now).

Good Luck

Thank you. Interestingly, I emailed Hamrick asking for help on this but,
unlike his usual very helpful support, I received no answer. You pretty
much confirmed what I suspected. Somewhere I have an addres for someone who
does profiling for $40 and intend to follow up on that.

Thank you again.
