Profile Folder Data in Autostart - Problem with MS Config

G

Guest

Hello,

I restored an Windows XP SP2 from a Backup and having a problem with the
startup, it takes longer than usually.

In msconfig startup were some items from c:\documentsandsettings\username
like a txt file I saved there and ntuser.dat and ntuser.dat log with the note
"common startup".
I moved the txt file to another folder and was able to remove the entry from
the startup folder, but of course I can't move ntuser.dat.

When I remove the checkbox from ntuser.dat there is a new entry checked
after reboot.

Virus Scanning and malicious software scannings didn't reveal anything
unusual. Is there any explanation and a solution for this situation?

Thank you!

Hi,

FYI In Windows 2000 (XP also), the location of user profile information for
each user of a computer, including the Ntuser.dat and Ntuser.dat.log, may
depend on whether the installation of the operating system was a fresh
installation or whether it was installed as an upgrade from Windows 95,
Windows 98, or Windows NT. In fresh installations and upgrades from Windows
95 and Windows 98, the Ntuser.dat and Ntuser.dat.log files are stored in
the systemdrive\Documents and Settings\username folder. In installations
that are upgrades from Windows NT, the Ntuser.dat and Ntuser.dat.log files
are stored in the systemroot\Profiles\username folder.

Regarding your issue, my suggestion is:

1. Let me know how slow the boot up process(compared with the process
before), it is slowed at which step? Preparing network or applying personal
settings?
2. Please try to create a new user account to test if the problem still
occurs.
3. You are loging to domain or loging to local?

4. I'd like to suggest enable user env log for troubleshooting:

Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious
problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft
cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using
Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
Use Registry Editor to add the following registry value (or modify it, if
the value already exists):
Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
Value: UserEnvDebugLevel
Value Type: REG_DWORD
Value Data: 10002 (Hexadecimal)

UserEnvDebugLevel can have the following values:
NONE 0x00000000
NORMAL 0x00000001
VERBOSE 0x00000002
LOGFILE 0x00010000
DEBUGGER 0x00020000

The default value is NORMAL|LOGFILE (0x00010001).

Note To disable logging, select NONE (where the value is 0X00000000).

You can also combine the values. For example, you can combine VERBOSE
0x00000002 and LOGFILE 0x00010000 to get 0x00010002. So if
UserEnvDebugLevel is set with a value of 0x00010002, this turns on both
LOGFILE and VERBOSE. Combining these values is the same as using an OR
statement: 0x00010000 OR 0x00000002 = 0x00010002

The log file is written to the %Systemroot%\Debug\UserMode\Userenv.log
file. If the Userenv.log exists and is greater than 300 KB, the existing
file will be renamed to Userenv.bak, and a new log file created.

Please send me the log via (e-mail address removed)

Looking forward to your reply.

Hello,

here my results:

1. applying personal settings takes longer - normally the screen doesn't
even show up. The time from the desktop appeared until the last autostart
program opened increased dramatically.
2. First look says same entries in msconfig, but I have to make some
Installations for the new user to test the autorun problem
3. Loging in local
4. Heres the log:

USERENV(250.254) 18:38:00:625 CUserProfile::CleanupUserProfile: Ref Count is
not 0
USERENV(250.254) 18:38:00:640 CUserProfile::CleanupUserProfile: Ref Count is

USERENV(250.254) 18:38:00:640 CUserProfile::CleanupUserProfile: Ref Count is

Additionally I tried Autostarts from Sysinternals, but it didn't reveal
anything helpful.

thank you, shrek

Hi,

Actually, I think there should have some more information. I still suggest
you send me the log. For your situation, I'd like to confirm that as you
said you have created a new user for test and you have to make some
Installations for the new user to test the autorun problem. I'd like to
know how is everything going now?
