Product Key & OEM ID

Hello,
I have inherited anything computer in my office and my knowledge is limited.
Can someone explain to me about Product Keys on crystals, Product Key
Certificates of Authenticity on the tower, and the OEM code in System
Properties? How can you match them up?

Doing some recent updates on the computers in our office, I discovered two
machines still have Windows 2000. They were all supposed to have been
upgraded with XP, but obviously weren't.

This is a really stupid question, but I was given a box full of software for
Office XP Professional. Is this the same as Windows XP Professional? Is it
included in the CD or is it something that was installed separately? I do not
see nay software labeled Windows XP Professional.

Your office has no idea how much trouble it's in with you at the helm
of "anything computer".

Why thank you, but so far I have done well. I appreciate your input for what
it is worth and you know how much it is worth.

Office XP is the name of the suite of productivity applications.

It is not an operating system.

To be honest I would really recommend hiring someone who is an IT person.

Not to make you feel bad, but someone who isn't trained on this stuff should
never be forced into that sort of position.

It's just asking for trouble.

I said it was a dumb question. We have IT people on the outside. All I am
trying to prevent is installing a Windows XP update on a computer when it has
already been installed on another.

Did not expect to be derided as a complete idiot. I actually have talents in
other areas not having to do with installing software. But, if that is how
some people entertain themselves then have at it. I have other resources.

You answered first Nonny, but I still havent had an answer to the difference
in the Product Key, OEM ID and Code on the Certificate of Authenticity. Do
you know the difference? Since this is a business site, I don't expect to be
flamed. If you don't know the answer then don't answer. Thanks

You think that a Usenent newsgroup is a "business site"??

BWAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Like I said, your office is in big trouble....

ok, now you're not getting any help.

If you'll noticed I jumped all over nonny for being rude to you.

I was merely stating that if it's not your field then to get someone in
there whose field it is.

Also to be honest (now that you've been rude) if you can't figure out
something as simple as what these items are then your talents have to lie
completely outside of the realm of computing.

Don't ask for help and then get rude.

None, these particular newsgroups are owned and ran by Microsoft.

So yes, this is a business newsgroup.

If you don't like it shove off.

Any key affixed to the PC is the key for whatever version of windows was
origonally installed by the manufacturer.
The key that you may find in the system may not match that key since
manufacturers use a their own key to install from an image.
The key affixed to the PC can be used to reinstall/recover the origonal
version of win, as supplied from new.
And if win has been upgraded the key on the PC may be irellevent.

Clearly. But we all start out that way.
Can someone explain to me about Product Keys on crystals,....

What do you mean by "on crystals?" The phrase makes no sense, whatsoever.

Product Key
Certificates of Authenticity on the tower, and the OEM code in System
Properties?

OEM Product Key on the label affixed to the computer is that of the OS
that was installed on the computer at the time of purchase. If the
computers have sense been upgraded to another OS, it is essentially now
meaningless.

How can you match them up?

You don't, if the computers have, as you say, been upgraded to WinXP
from an earlier OS.

Not even close Windows XP is an operating system, and Office XP is a
productivity suite.

Is it
included in the CD or is it something that was installed separately?

Office is purchased and installed separately from the operating system.
I do not
see nay software labeled Windows XP Professional.
