Processor Scheduling, my Computer is on its Deathbed

Sorry for the previous post, not used to this
keyboard (I use a Natural.)

I have a Dell Dimension 8200 with a 2.53 gig P4
processor, an 80 and a 120 gig hard drive, 512 megs of
RDRAM, and an ATI Radeon 9700 Pro.
I was reading a tweaking guide for gaming on a
site (I've forgotten the URL.) and changed the processor
scheduling from "Background Tasks" to "Current Program."
I believe it was current Program, anyway. Since I would
have to restart, I left it on, and turned it off when I
went to bed.
I came back home and turned it on, but when
it "booted" I got the infamous Core Dump error. I tried
to reboot quite a few times, and eventually tried Safe
Mode, which also gave me a core dump. I then used "Last
Known good Configuration." It booted, but I couldn't see
or use any of my files. Just in case, I tried to back up
My Documents onto my 120 gig hard drive, but the folder
was completely empty. All of the folders seemed to be
empty (even looking at them using the command prompt.)
Frustrated, I shut it down and put in my Knoppix
(Linux) CD to check my files, and they are, in fact, all
there. I still couldn't back up any files (most of them
are already backed up, but I have some school files that
I'd prefer to keep around until the end of the year.)
While I was in Windows, I tried to get back into the
Control Panel and reset my processor scheduling, but it
couldn't find the crucial .dll it needed (inadequate
system resources.)
Any files that I can see can't be opened because
I don't have adequate system resources. I have a Windows
XP upgrade CD, and tried to use the Repair function, but
couldn't open any files on the D:\ drive. I also tried to
boot from the CD, but got a Core Dump. I attempted to use
WINE in knoppix to run the setup.exe from the CD (I
didn't really think this world work, but it couldn't
really do much harm.)
That is all I've got so far, and I *am* able to
boot the computer using Knoppix-STD (Security Tools
Distribution) and look at all my files normally. Any help
would be greatly appreciated. I have two computers, but
of course one is dead and the other refuses to connect to
our LAN (it's an old 98 machine,) so excuse me if I don't
reply promptly.

Hello,

Changing the processor schduling from background tasks to programs should
definatly not cause the problems that you are describing. Perhaps there is
somthing else that you changed as well. Or maybe you computer was infected
with somthing. Please post more on what else if anything you did to your
computer.

I can't remember anything else I did (all of my other
tweaking that night was in Battlefield 1942's .con
files.) I could very well had been infected with
something, and the restart could've caused whatever it
was to take effect. Thanks.
