Problems with VISTA and smart card login

Has anyone had any experience with VISTA and Navy & Marine Corp
Intranet (NMCI) smart card DOD CAC cards. VISTA sees the smart card
when inserted but say it is unable to read it. Wondering if I could
use my DOD CAC card with PKI certs to login to a VISTA laptop equiped
with a smart card reader to improve security.

First, that will only work if your domain controller has DOD PKI
integration, in other words, if it trusts the DOD PKI. If not, it won't work.
If you have a stand-alone Vista machine, it won't work at all as Windows only
supports Smart Card logon for domain accounts.

Once you have that settled you need a Smart Card provider that matches the
one on the CAC card. I do not remember which one the DOD settled on finally,
but it is probably not one that is built into Vista.
