problems with the installer

I'm hoping someone can elp with this problem as its really frustrating me.

I have a new computer with XP professional on it. Wanting to fill it up its
120Gb hard drive with software I went out and bought textbridge and
autoroute - two programs I will use a lot.

I installed textbridge first and all was OK. Then when i came back later to
install autoroute 2004 i got the following message box.

"The Windows Installer could not be accessed. This can occur if you are
running Windows in 'safe' mode (which I'm not), or if
Windows Installer is not correctly installed. etc."

I've tried to install a newer version of Installer, but I got the msg that
Installer was already installed, and the process would not proceed. The
current copy of installer that comes up in dialogs is:

"ScanSoft Textbridge Pro 11.0"

How can I get round this problem as I find that it is happening to all the
programs I want to install, not just autoroute.

I tried uninstalling textbridge, but that didn't remove the installer. Can i
disable it? Is that wise, what should I try next?
