problems with some usb devices not showing up

Hi all,

I wonder if I might be able to get some advice for my nephew. He uses
Windows XP SP2 and is having problems with using some USB devices.

Apparently the camera and printer work ok but others don't. He says in
an email:

"if we want to upload photos from our digital camera, it works just as
it would normally, but if i want to put in my mp3 player or a removable
usb drive all that happens is that the "remove hardware safely" icon
comes up in the taskbar, and it doesn't come up in my computer."

The difficulties seemed to have occurred after having problems
connecting to the internet. After some troubleshooting he ran netsh
which fixed the connectivity problem.

Any suggestions on where to start fixing the problem? I've done a bit of
a search through the Microsoft support website, but nothing I've found
seems to have helped.

TIA,

slowly.

Hi again. I sent the link to my nephew and he's responded back with this:

"When I have my usb device connected and follow those instructions you
sent me it hasn't changed anything, I can get into the usb device by
typing in the drive path I assigned it but only through internet
explorer, so I cant change anything. It's also still not showing up in
my computer or in explorer."

Any other suggestions you can think of?

Cheers :)
