Problems with software

I have recently upgraded to Xp home edition from Me, on trying to instal some
of my old software i keep getting the error message in a grey box with blue
headed area saying 16 bit windows subsystem then underneath in the grey box:

c:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt. The system file is not suitable for running
MS-DOS and microsoft applications. Choose 'close' to terminate the
application.

Would truely be grateful for any assistence on resolving this problem
