Problems with Service Pack 2 - Cannot Install

Hi,
I am having major problems with installing service pack 2. I had a virus which forced me to use the repair option off my windows xp disc therefore wiping all my updates from windows. Using windows automatic update I reinstalled everything but the first (very slow) reboot resulted in a shrunk task bar and whenever I minimised anything it disappeared from the task bar and only alt tab would get it back. System restore and safe mode made no difference – infact system restore wouldn’t open.

I have since reinstalled windows using the repair option and installed all the update except service pack 2 and everything works fine. Can I get away with not installing service pack 2 or do I need it?

I have run chkdisk, lavsoft ad ware and f secure virus checker.

I have read on on BIOS updates and checked fujutsu siemens for any, as well as downloading the update on the Microsoft website for the BIOS to do with the Pentium 4 processor, all to no avail.

I have a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo D 8830
Pentium 4 3.06

Any ideas

Thanks in advance.

John
