problems with internet connection

I wasn't sure where to post this...

Anyway, this problem has been going on for quite sometime.
At my house, at my dorm in college, and at my house in
college. First, the problem would be that I would be
connected but all of a sudden my internet would stop
(though the icon said it was still connected and
everything) and I would click repair and it would say
TCP/IP not enabled. So i fooled around with it (can't
remember what) and now I have the same problem only it
stops working more frequently, it says cable is unplugged
which it isn't, and when i click repair it can't renew my
IP address, and it says IP is already being used or
something like that. what can i do. i have windows xp
professional, internet explorer 6. anything else i should
add?

Control Panel (Classic View), Network Connections, Right Click
on the Local Area Connection, take Properties. If there is a Tab
named Authentification, Click it and then Uncheck "Use 802....."
Apply, Ok .... Reboot
