Problems with IE as default browser

G

Guest

Hello,

I'm running Windows XP with both SP1 and SP2 installed.

I'm unable to get the checkbox in Internet Options, "internet explorer
should check to see whether it is the default browser" to save. When I
uncheck the box, apply it, and close Internet explorer, when I re-open it,
it's back! This is problem also occurs if I try to change it via the
control panel.

My goal is to use a third-party browser generally, but to open Internet
Explorer when I would like to, without facing the question of whether I would
like to make IE my default browser.

Any ideas?

Thanks very much!

Hi JD :)

Try the following and see if it helps:

How to make IE or another browser the default browser

How to Make Internet Explorer the Default Web Browser (Q284456)

Default browser still points to MYIE2.....:

For WinXP SP1 and above, you can use the "Set Program Access and Defaults"
feature.

Other options:

Internet Explorer should check to see whether it is the default browser -
option does not work:

My explanation on the method offered in the link above:

Tip #41: Setting Internet Explorer as the default browser

or..

Try this:
Open IE | Tools | Internet Options | Programs tab | make sure
"Internet Explorer should check to see whether it is the default browser" is
CHECKED.
Press Ok, and when you next run IE, a confirmation
dialog box should appear asking you whether you want it to be the
default browser again. Click Yes.

To reset Internet Explorer settings
If you installed another Web browser after installing Internet
Explorer and Internet Tools, some of your Internet Explorer settings
may have changed. You can reset your Internet Explorer settings to
their original defaults, including your home page and search pages,
and choice of default browser, without changing your other browser's
settings.
1.. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
2.. Click the Programs tab.
3.. Click the Reset Web Settings button.

Web Settings button
[[Click this to reset the default Internet Explorer settings for your home
and search pages, and prompt to make Internet Explorer your default browser.
Note: This only resets these settings if you have installed another Web
browser after installing Internet Explorer and Internet Tools, and that
browser has changed the default settings.]]

Dear Jan,

Thanks very much for you comprehensive post. Unfortunately, the problem
remains. Even after following all these trails, I'm still unable to change
that checkmark.

For that matter, after following the instructions to reinstall IExplorer, it
still refuses to attempt to reinstall, even after setting the register
variable to zero.

I guess I'm stumped.

Thanks again,
JD

Hi JD :)

I have only one other suggestion which you might try:

Close all running applications, flush the TIF cache files
Safely Delete the Temporary Internet Files
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm

Change the default web browser.
Flush the cache again (if they exist)
Close IE
Reboot.

Hope this helps

Jan :)
