problems with fast user switching

For some reason my WinXP Pro system recently disabled Fast User Switching. When I tried to re-enable it, I was first told I needed to disable offline files, which was quite a surprise because I never consciously enabled them. After disabling offline files, the control panel lets me enable Fast User Switching, but everytime I try to switch between users I get the Unlock Computer Dialog saying that the computer has been locked by (current user) and I need to unlock it. It asks for user name and password. Since none of the accounts on this box have passwords, I just hit return and it kicks me back into my user account.

The only way to successfully switch users is to log off of one and onto another. Also, I've set the Welcome screen interface to be ON, but it still gives me the old style logon window with the input fields for user name and password.

Anyone know why it keeps thinking the computer is locked when I try to switch users? Any help would be way appreciated..

Thanks Wesley and Kelly for your tips. I've seen and tried all the stuff you reccommended on past posts, but none of it worked. When I looked for GinaDLL in the registry, it's not there. I've even tried creating a registry item for it, but it seems to disappear next time I check. What now???

One factor that may be associated is that we recently installed Dragon Naturally Speaking software. However, I tried uninstalling it and my problem didn't go away, so I've since re-installed.

Please let me know of any other ideas....

msgina.dll = Windows NT Logon GINA DLL

The only references in the registry you're like to find to msgina.dll are in
Windows Updates.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates\Windows
XP\SP2\KB835732\Filelist\20
FileName
msgina.dll

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates\Windows
XP\SP2\KB835732\Filelist\3
FileName
msgina.dll

You can try this:

Read instructions at the top.
Scroll down to:
45. Right hand side.
Click on:
Restore the Welcome Screen - Gina.Dll Error

I am not sure if it will do any good.

No luck yet. I did the tweak, but I still don't get the Welcome Screen after reboot, and I still get the Computer Locked message when I try to switch users. Any other ideas?

I read way too many posts/threads in a day. So hold on here and we are
going to start over. Without re-reading this thread:

1. Are you part of a domain? If yes, this will never work.
2. If no, Control Panel/User Accounts: Change the way users log
on.....check both boxes.
3. If you are initiating Switch User from the Task Manager........
4. Go to Start/Run: control userpasswords2/Advanced and uncheck Secure
Logon.
5. Note: That setting will get you the locked message.
6. Offline Files: When the message appears, click ok and then uncheck the
Enable Offline Files check box.

Thanks again Kelly, but none of those items yields anything for me. I came across one MS Knowledgebase Article, 817164, which talks about getting the logon screen with a black background(which is the case for me). They say you have to either contact MS for a patch or wait for the next Service Pack. I'm thinking this might be the issue I've got. Are you familiar w/this one?

Hey guys it's me again. Been a while, but hopefully someone will still
respond.

Got the patch from Microsoft, and it didn't work. Neither did an
installation of SP2. In both cases, if I remember correctly, computer booted
and for a brief second I got the logon screen with the regular blue
background instead of black, and shortly thereafter the system reset and
rebooted. From there on out it's been black background on the logon screen
and no Fast User Switching again.

Don't know what to do from here. Is Microsoft likely to help if I pay for
support?

I just recently solved the exact same problem and tried most of th
things you had tried as well. It turned out that in the registry unde
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogo
there is a key called UIHost. On a typical fresh install this will jus
have the value "logonui.exe". That executable will be in th
windows\system32 directory. In my case I found that this pointed to
different logonui.exe in a directory that didn't even exist on my P
any more. A long time ago I had played with StyleXP, a program tha
lets you change the welcome screen, and forgotten all about it.

Perhaps on your system UIHost is pointing to something invalid or you
logonui.exe is corrupt.

I hope this helps.

cheers,
Kevi
