Problems with accessing pages on the Internet with XP SP2

I recently got a new system which came pre-installed with Windows XP
Professional SP2. My prior system was Win98 SE. Since then, I have had a
few strange problems with the internet that I haven't been able to resolve.
I use a cable modem.

Some pages cause the browser to hang and can only be closed by using
ctrl-alt-del, then end task. Two examples of this are the admittedly
dissimilar in content but similar in terms of a lot of graphics sites -
iVillage and ESPN. I tried these sites with Netscape v 7.2 and they work
fine.

My other problem is even more concerning. I access the hospital web site
for work through my browser. There are a couple of features of this -
displaying EKGs and printing reports - which are Java based. These have
never worked on this system, but worked fine on my old system. The
computers at the hospital itself are WinXP Professional SP2, so it seems
like there must be a setting I can change to fix this, but I can't figure
out what it is. I could not get these features to work with Netscape.

While trying to resolve these problems, I did install the latest version of
Java through the Sun site. I also tried other remedies which were mentioned
here, such as disabling the pop-up blocker and clearing any type of cache I
could think of, all with no success.

I am not using a proxy server. The computer came with McAfee security,
which I am not a big fan of, that has a firewall and antivirus program. I
disabled the Windows Firewall so they won't conflict.

I would really appreciate assistance with these problems, or a website which
might help.

Hi medgirl :)

Regarding Java:

IE no longer comes with Java because of a suit by Sun.
Test Java: http://www.fitwise.com/testjava.asp
Java VM: http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/answers_9.htm#java2
Tus, XP does not have Java. Also, understand that because of a court
decision Microsoft will stop all Java support recommending that you use the

Jan,

Thank you for your response. Unfortunately, I still haven't gotten things
to work. Every site I use that tests whether or not Java is working
indicates that it is, but I am still getting errors. I did try installing
the Build 5 you linked to (is this a beta version)? But while this shows a
different image while trying to work, it still ultimately fails. Again, I
still get the big red X in the upper left hand corner with the failed Java
applets. As for the websites, like ESPN, they still hang. Any suggestions
would be appreciated - I am glad for your help!

Thanks,
m

Hi medgirl :)

Well...this kind of thing in XP is a bit hard to nail at times. Lets's try
again... :)

How to check HOSTS file

Windows/host (it will not have an extension, and if there is more than one,
choose the one that says Application in a column to the right) . Right click
on it and select Open with.....when the window opens, scroll down the list
to Notepad. Once it opens in Notepad, scroll down the list to see if that
site is in the list. If so, DO NOT delete it, just go to the very front of
the line to the left and enter # in front of the line so that it looks
similar to the one below, as the entries with # in front will be ignored.

# Entries with other comments are searchable via Google.

Then click the save button and close. Then try the site again.

If you have any Norton program disable it, or better still, uninstall it and
see if the problem persists.

Be sure your Java is "Enabled."

To enable Java, take these steps:

From the Menu bar, select Tools.
Select Internet Options.
Select Security.

Click Custom Level.
Scroll down the Security Settings box to Microsoft VM, then Java Permission,
select Medium Safety. Click OK.
A prompt box will now appear asking "Warning... Are you sure you want to
change the security settings for this zone? Yes/No." Click Yes.
Click OK.
