Problems while switching users

Hi.

I just installed vista ultimate with SP1, and I've encountered some strange
behavior. When I first log into an account everything works fine, but when I
switch to a second account, or even log off the first one and then open
another, vista makes some problems. For example, the welcome screen appears
empty, no program is shown on the taskbar, and not all the notification icons
show up. Further more, it seems that the CPU start working hard for no
apparent reason, and if I open My Computer, it seems empty.
Does anyone knows why it happens or how to solve it?

Thanks,
Yoni

I have the same problem. I installed sp1 with not errors or problems (it
took about an hour.) When it did its final reboot, I open my admin accout
and things seemed to be working beautifully. I logged off of admin and on to
a standard user account and only one or two of the notification area icons
appeared and the sidebar background appeared, but none of the gadgets were
there. I also noticed that the system was doggedly slow. I tried to log
back onto the admin account and had the same issues. A reboot and log on to
any account works fine until you switch users (I usually log off and log onto
the other account, but switching accounts seems to do the same thing.) I
finally reverted back to a known good restore point and tried again (I
thought I knew what the problem was,) but to no avail after the reinstall I
had the same problem. I suspect it is a video driver issue and I don't
really know how to address it. I have a laptop with a on board GPU and
Nvidia says that I shouldn't update from their site, I should wait for a Mfg
update, but who knows when HP will decide to do that. Any help would be
greatly appreciated. System is as follows:

HP Pavilion dv6629wm (wm stands for Wal-Mart...Black Friday Special)
AMD Turion 64 x2 processor running at 1.9GHz
2GB Paired RAM
Windows Vista Home Premium
Nvidia on board video card Geforce 7150M
100GB free hard drive space.

Drop a line if you have any suggestions.

Thanks,
Benny

I tried removing SP1, and guess what? everything went back to normal,
although it's noticeably slower, it's not too bad, and I don't know about
you, but I'd opt for stability and reliability over speed any day.
I just hope an update is on the way to get this straight.

Good day

I have tried everything that I could think of and not accomplished anything.
I has some software that I thought was the culprit, but after uninstalling it
and re-applying sp1 I still didn't have a stable system. At this point, I
have installed sp1 about 5 times now. Trying something different every time.
I am just at a loss. Hopefully, somebody here will pop up and say, "Oh,
just do this" and we'll all be up and running with sp1.

Keep looking and let me know if you get anywhere.

I'm having exactly the same problem. Exactly !!

Can you guys post your specs so we can try to see what we all have in common
and maybe how to solve this.

Windowes Vista Ultimate x64 SP1
Intel Core 2 CPU 6600 @ 2.4GHz
4.00GB RAM
Nvidia GeForce 7950GT (driver 169.25)
Motherboard - Gigabyte 965P-DQ6 (chipset driver 8.3.1.1011)

It appears this problem is not effecting very many people but then again, it
is effecting all of us so let's solve this thing!

Cheers,

Okay, I just managed to solve this problem (for me anyway)!!!!!

I discovered that my anti-virus was causing the problem. If I disable the AV
then no problem. Not ideal, but then I found out more...

I am using Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7.0.1.325. To completely solve the problem
and leave the AV running (as we all no doubt want) I had to untick 'Registry
Guard' in the 'Proactive Defense' area. That solves the problem!

Hope this helps the rest of you too!!

Yes,it works for me too!
Indeed I have Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7.0.1.321 and unchecking the Registry
Guard helped immediately.
Thanks a lot for this! You helped me save me many hours today...
Grateful,
Jörg

I have had the same problem, but the disabling Kaspersky registry guard only
goes so far. I can open Outlook but I cannot close except by using 'task
manager', and I think there are other problems. I'm waiting for Kaspersky
suuport to get back to me.

Way to go Wylee,

I just changed the KIS Registry Guard Setting and reapplied the SP and now I
don't have any of the issues.

Thanks for the assistance.

OMG! I was having the exact same problem, and now its fixed! Altough i feel
that my computer is a little less safer now that registry guard is off. I
will ask around in the Kaspersky forums for more.

I have been on the forums and found out that the issue known and that a fix
is apparently in version 8.0.

thank god for google!! this problem has been bugging me since SP1 but wasn't
sure if it was that or my onboard gfx drivers, which I also installed at the
same time. I found the kaspersky item which led me here. I just logged off
my second user went to the first disabled the regguard and then switched to
the 2nd user and hey presto! didn't even need to reboot.

still think we're kind of lucky it was only this problem, remember hearing
that certain AV products wouldn't work at all with Vista SP1...

AMD 64 x2 Dual Core 4200+ (2.2ghz)
