Problems Using ntbackup!

Hi folks,

I recently had some trouble with my computer so I called my manufacturers
support helpline to ask for assistance, they suggested that I had to
re-install the system. I realised I had to back up all my work (documents
and settings) so I used ntbackup running under Windows XP Home Edition. The
backup created succesfully I have it stored on an external drive.

I used the system recovery program (supplied by my PC's manufacturer) to
restore the computer to the factory settings, and then I used Microsoft
Update to get my system upto date. After this I also installed my AntiVirus
software and got that updated too.

I created a new user with the User Accounts control panel, this user has the
same name as the user account for which I used ntbackup to back up the
documents and settings.

I then decided to run the backup I created in order to re-install my
documents and settings. However this isn't working - ntbackup runs through
the process of working, and appears to be processing the files, but files
"processed" does not reach anywhere near files "estimated" in the backup,
and it appears that no files are written to the disk.

I checked in the My Documents folder, and there are no changes. I also
checked "C:Documents and Settings", and in all the Documents and Settings
folders there, and none of the Documents and Settings from the original
backup appear in any of those folders.

I also noticed that I have these folders All Users, Default User, HP_Owner,
Music, Music.PAVILION. I can not gain access to the folder "Music", it is
actually Music's douments and settings that I am trying to restore. The
Music "documents and settings" folder is read only, if I try to uncheck read
only, it reverts back to read only the next time I check the folder
properties. In addtion the Music documents and settings folder is empty.

What do I have to do to get the documents and settings for the user Music,
back onto my computer????

Hi,

First, a couple of things: 1) The 'read only' tick on the folder's
properties is meaningless, this attribute only applies to files and has
nothing to do with your problem. 2) To gain access to the 'Music' folder you
need to change permissions on it, see:
http://rickrogers.org/fixes.htm#Taking_ownership

As to the backup, once you change permissions, it may restore properly.
