Problems updating links

I just upgraded my server to Microsoft Small Business Server. We had a
number of Word files that contained links to Excel files. All the links were
broken in transferring the files, which we expected in making the upgrade.
The problem we are having is when we re-link the files, that works but when
we make further to the Excel file and want to update the link, we cannot
simply hit "Update links" like we did before we upgraded the server but have
to completely re-link the files everytime. Is there anyway to make "update
links" work? What am I missing?

See if the information in either or both of these KB articles pertains?

Cindy:

Thank you. It appears that this is a problem that Microsoft is aware of. I
called their technical hotline and am working with one of their Word
engineers. So far, he has not been able to figure out the problem.

It appears that one solution is to open a newWord file, copy in our
previous text from the old file, and then relink all links - the links will
work after that.
