Problems trying to use portrait & landscape in same document

Sean

I have a table thats too big to work in portrait, so I
want to print it in landscape. Help says to select the
text on the target page & in Page Setup apply landscape
to Selected Text Only. After doing this it applies the
change to the whole document. I notice behind the Page
Setup dialog, that my selection expands to the whole
document. What am I doing wrong?
Thanks in advance,
Sean

Hi Sean

The trick here is to know that Word can break up a document into
sections. And page orientation (portrait or landscape) is a property of
a section. Every document consists of at least one section (on the
status bar, you always see something like Page 1 Sec 1). If you want
some pages portrait, a page or two in landscape, and then more portrait
pages, then you need 3 sections (portrait - landscape - protrait).

To insert a break to create a new section, do Insert > Break and click
Next Page. Now the status bar says you're in Sec 2. If you choose File >
Page Setup, you can now tell Word you want just this section in
landscape. Where you want to go back to portrait, do Insert > Break
again, and set the last section to be portrait.

To add to what Shauna has said, the method you were trying to use should
work (and I know did work in Word 97), but the one time I tried it in Word
2002, I found that I got the same results you did. I don't know what has
changed, but in fact it now may be necessary to insert the section breaks
manually instead of counting on Word to do it for you. <sigh>

Thanks Shauna, but I still can't seem to figure out whats
going on with this document. Its a multipage document
with 1 section. If I try to insert a break at the bottom
of the document as you suggested it works fine - a new
section/last page. When I try to insert a break anywhere
in the body of the document, it creates the section after
the top table cell in the first page. This is a document
with lots of formatting, tables, etc.
Thanks for your help,
Sean

If you're trying to change orientation in the middle of a table, you will
have to split the table.

I just tried the "page setup for selected text" method on a table in
Word 2002 SP2, and it worked fine. In fact, I even tried selecting a
few rows from the middle of the table and applying the method, and
Word split the table and got the orientations right for each section.

So it isn't just a version bug. There must be some other variable that
determines whether or not it is going to work...
