Hello,
I have been trying to help a friend of mine access data from his old XP
based laptop that died with his new Visa laptop. In XP he was diligent
in running the MS backup tool to save his files to an external USB
drive. Using Vista he has downloaded a tool from the MS Web site that
will restore the backups to Vista. But now his data is restored he
cannot access it. Folders appear empty (according to the flyover) and he
gets some authority error when trying to view them with Windows Explorer.
I had him get a usb enclosure for the drive from the old laptop. Even
there he is unable to access the data (mostly photographs) in the
folders of his Documents and Settings from the old machine.
As admin he has tried changing the owner of the folders but it keeps
changing back to what it was.
I am guessing that this is simply some authority thing in Vista but I
really don't know how to resolve it for him. If anyone has an idea I am
sure he will be greatly appreciative.
