Problems Networking

Here we go... I have three computers, one Dell (2.4ghz) one Compaq (1.2) and
a new Gateway (2.8). All run Windows XP with Service Pack 2 and the Gateway
also has Media Center Edition 2002. The Dell and Compaq were previously
networked with a wireless router and PCI adapter (in the Compaq), both
802.11g. This set up worked fine for sharing internet and also file/print
sharing.

With the Gateway, which also has an added PCI adapter, I can use the
internet over the wireless network, but file/print sharing doesn't work. I
can't even access MSHOME from the Gateway. The other two computers still
network and file/print share fine, but not the Gateway.

All IPs are assigned by DHCP in the 192.168.1.x range and ping one another
fine, so I'm convinced its a software issue. The fact that the only computer
with MCE doesn't network also makes me think this. I have file/print sharing
enabled on my Gateway.

Any suggestions?

I can also provide more details if needed.

Brandon,

This is a rather well known scenario, but there are a few different possible
causes. Start from this article, please, and provide "browstat status" and
"ipconfig /all" from each computer.

Brandon,

Let's try again.

Two areas: workgroup and firewall. Right click on "My compter", select the
"Computer name" tab and note the Workgroup for each of the machines. If they're
not the same, use the Change button to make them the same. Presumably the
Gateway may not yet have been made a member.

On the firewall angle, you're not able to share resources but the ips should
still be able to ping, see each other. Start > run > type "cmd" <enter> to bring
up a dos box. Then type ping "one of the other machines( your Dell is id'd as
192.168.1.2, the compaq is 192.168.1.3 and the gateway looks to be 192.168.1.4
The command would then be, as an example, ping 192.168.1.4 <enter>

good luck with it!

I am able to ping between computers, and all computers are in MSHOME, but I
suspect that the Gateway is making its own MSHOME instead of joining the
other computers' MSHOME workgroup.

I was also able to access my files from the Compaq while on my Gateway
temporarily, but not the Dell. This was a complete mystery to me. It stopped
working so I can't give you any information on how the network was working
when it was going. I usually have my Compaq off too because it slows down
the internet on the Gateway when on (it is on the 2nd floor between the Dell
(3rd) and Gateway (1st) so I think it takes some of Gateway's signal when on).

Brandon,

Dell has IPV6 aka Teredo Tunneling. Remove that first, then test everything.
Post updated "ipconfig /all" for Dell, and "browstat status" from all 3
computers, if any problems remain.

I thought it was going to be one of those 8-(.

I can think of one more command that may help you troubleshoot. From a dos
box(start>run cmd<enter>) type net view<enter> to get the names of the computers
in the workgroup and then try each one specically e.g. net show \\gateway<enter>
to see what resources are being shared. You'll be able to see the shares of your
local as well as the other boxes. The new machine may not yet have shares,
perhaps there are problems with permissions and/or sharing. You can check those
values by right clicking the shared resource from within the windows explorer
interface, and selecting the sharing or security tabs.

Finally, the problem may be in the "guest" user account. Maybe the user name of
the gateway isn't recognized by the older machines because the guest account
isn't enabled(I'm not recommending this, I think you should have the same
password protected account on each individual machine) We can't know from here
how you've set up your user accounts on the various machines, but if you can
ping and all machines are in the same workgroup, then it's likely that there are
issues in the user accounts that are preventing the new box from sharing.

OK, I disabled IPv6 on the Dell, so heres the updated info. I was able to
see the Gateway in MSHOME from the Dell and Compaq, but got an error when
trying to enter it. From the Gateway, I'm not able to enter MSHOME at all.

Chuck

OK, I disabled IPv6 on the Dell, so heres the updated info. I was able to
see the Gateway in MSHOME from the Dell and Compaq, but got an error when
trying to enter it. From the Gateway, I'm not able to enter MSHOME at all.

<SNIP>

Brandon,

OK, that's a good start.
# All computers are on the same subnet 192.168.1.0/24, and getting DHCP settings
from 192.168.1.1.
# All computers have compatible name resolution (Hybrid, Mixed, and Unknown will
work together).
# No computers have any gratuitous protocols.
# Computer Dell, the master browser, can receive datagrams from the other 2
("There are 3 servers in domain MSHOME...").

What Edition (Home / Pro) on each computer?

Let's enumerate your symptoms now. Take the following code (everything inside
the "#####"). (Please verify computer names and ip addresses).

1. Open Notepad. Ensure that Format - Word Wrap is not checked. Highlight
then Copy the code (Ctrl-C), precisely as it is presented, and Paste (Ctrl-V)
into Notepad. Verify, and correct, names and addresses if necessary.
2. Save the Notepad file as "cdiag.cmd", as type "All Files", into the root
folder "C:\".
3. Run it by Start - Run - "c:\cdiag".
4. Wait patiently.
5. When Notepad opens up displaying c:\cdiag.txt, first check Format and
ensure that Word Wrap is NOT checked! Then, copy the entire contents (Ctrl-A
Ctrl-C) and paste (Ctrl-V) into your next post.

Do this from all computers, please, with all computers powered up and online.

Dell - XP Home SP2, Compaq - XP Home SP2, Gateway - XP MCE 2005

Sorry if the Presario Info is hard to read, in sending it over it got a
little garbled up so I tried to fix as much of it as I couldby looking at the
others.

<SNIP>

OK, Brandon,

You've got an interesting set of problems. I'll give you the simplest ones to
see, which are symmetrical.
# All 3 computers cannot ping themselves, by name or by IP address, getting name
resolution OK, but timing out.
# However, Dell and Compaq can reference the other in all 4 tests successfully.
# Gateway can Net View itself, but neither Dell or Compaq.
# Dell and Compaq can Net View each other and itself, but neither can Net View
Gateway.
# All 3 computers can Net View both Dell and Compaq; none can Net View Gateway.

The only known causes for pings blocked is a firewall, or LSP / Winsock
corruption.
Firewalls:

Please check everything very diligently, and let us know what you find out. I'd
really like to try and correlate the observations from CDiag against precise
causes. And of course having your Windows Networking operational would be good.

Netowork Working (more or less)! I went into Norton Internet Security,
Personal Firewall, and then Advanced Settings and General Rules. What I had
to change was, by default which is really confusing to me, is Windows File
Sharing was BLOCKED. I set this to allow and it works. I am able to get
into mshome now, but I can't see the computers. If I manually type in
"\\Dell" it works. I just now got it working so I'm going to do a restart
and see if that will make the computers show up in the workgroup. I haven't
tested to see if I can get in Compaq yet because its usually off since its so
slow (1.2ghz), but it looks promising!

After a restart, I got everything up and running, including the Presario.
The internet kind of didn't work though, but after another restart, it's
alive and kicking.

But I have another question. In preperation for Xbox 360 launch and some
online Kameo coop, I need to get my current Xbox on Live so I know 360 will
go smoothly. I have to connect the Xbox with a networking cable into
Gateway's ethernet card. For some reason though, when I have the ethernet
card in the 192.168.1.x range that my network is in, the internet doesn't
work. When trying to use the internet, I think it is sending everything
through the ethernet instead of the Wireless PCI.

Is this scenario possible? If so, what settings do I need to have on my
ethernet card and Xbox?

If this doesn't work out, I might be able to buy the wireless adapter for
360, but would prefer to try it with my existing equipment.
