Problems networking 2 pc's

I'm trying to network 2 pc's together with a crossover cable. Keep getting
network cable is disconnected. Have checked the cable and set up, and have
specified IP addresses in my network. Both Pc's say that all hardware is
working OK. What worries me is that I get a flashing green light at the back
of one PC, but a flashing orange light on the other PC.

Anyone got any ideas?

If you are getting 'Cable Unplugged' messages, then you need to double-check
that the cable really is a crossover cable. Look at the order of the
coloured cores as they go into the plug, and compare one end to the other.
If they are in the same sequence, it's not a crossover cable.

If it is a proper crossover cable, it's possible that one or other of the
cards does not support crossover cables properly. This is fairly uncommon.

Something worth trying it to go into the card properties and manually set
the speed and duplex settings on each end, rather than using auto-detect.
Start with 10Mbit, half duplex on each end, and work your way up to 100-Full
Duplex.

If you still can't get a steady link light, the next thing to try would bo
to use a hub/switch/router and 2 regular ( non-crossover) cables.

It is of course possible you have a bad network interface card at one end.

Alison,

The flashing orange light certainly doesn't sound like working hardware on both
ends. Look at the configuration on the device drivers, in Local Area Connection
Properties - Configure - Advanced tab. What media type is in use on both cards?
"100 Full", or "Auto Select"? Try changing from one selection to the other on
ONE computer. If that doesn't help, put that setting back, and try the other
computer. Test one setting change at a time.

If changing the setting on both computers (one at a time) doesn't help, get
another crossover cable. They can be defective.

Or get a switch, and a pair of straight-thru cables. A switch, with its own set
of lights, will help you identify which computer (cable / network card) is
defective.
