Problems installing Windows XP Service Pack 2

Gary

Whenever I try to install Win XP Service Pack 2, it stops
and says 'cannot copy file atapi.sys'. I have done what
the Knowledge Base said, uninstall Daemon Tools and
reboot computer, but it still stops when I try to install
Service Pack 2. I am running Windows XP Home SP1, HP
Pavilion 541c, 512MB ram, Athlon 1.667 processor, 80GB HD.

Hi

This error message can be caused by virtual drives software.

If you are using any virtual drives, for example Daemon Tools or
Alcohol's virtual drive, then you must disable them, and in the case
of Daemon Tools uninstall the program.

Alternatively, try to rename the file before (or while) you
install the service pack:

When the installation complains about Atapi.sys and asks you to
"Retry" or "Cancel", simply go to Windows/System32/Drivers and
rename Atapi.sys to whatever. Then go back to the installation
and select "Retry" - the installation should then complete.

Thanks for the info. Will give it a try as soon as I
figure out what 'Microsoft QFE update(835409)' is. HP
says I need to download/install this BEFORE I install
Service Pack 2. It is supposed to be a fix for a
conflict with 'System Restore' and Service Pack 2 on the
HP Pavilion computers. Again, Thanks...

thanks for the great advice...but unfortunately i just went ahead an
told sp2 to ignore the atapi.sys file. i didn't want to have to g
through the whole hours long process again and i had not yet seen th
microsoft article.

i see from the microsoft article that this means sp2 will not have mad
a backup copy of the file.

is there any way i can copy atapi.sys manually somewhere so that i ca
repair the damage i have done by telling the installation to continu
without the atapi.sys file???

i know i should have looked before leaping...

Hi

What is the version number on the two following files (right click,
Properties, select the Version tab):

%windir%\ServicePackFiles\i386\atapi.sys
%windir%\System32\Drivers\atapi.sys

(%windir% is typically C:\Windows)

They should both be version 5.1.2600.2180
