Problems Installing Service Pack 2

I recently had to have my PC rebuilt after the CPU failed, the old CPU was an
Intel P4 which was fine when I installed SP2.

On the rebuild I decided on an AMD Athlon 3500 64 bit processor.

The problem is now I can not install Service Pack 2 each time I do it
crashes and I have to restart in safe mode and recover the PC before SP2 was
installed. I have read that 64 bit processors can not install service pack 2
is this true and if not how do I fix my problem any help would be welcome.

Thanks for the posting but I have tried to get support this way but the site
tries to redirect me to my computer manufacturer who did install the Windows
XP I am using but not with this CPU.

In other words - you have an OEM version of the Operating System - and
support does come from those who installed it.

Have you cleaned this system of all malware? Updated all the hardware
drivers to the latest? Made sure a BIOS upgrade is not required? Are you
using the full download/CD of SP2 and not the
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ site to install SP2?

As for your direct question - SP2 can be installed on any Windows XP
operating system it supports (Which is not the x64 version - so I feel
compelled to ask - what version of XP are you running? Home, Professional,
Media Center?)
