Problems Getting any newsgroup headers, or updating group list..

C

Charlie

Ok
Before you say it I am at work typing this and not at home, as my home
connection I cannot seem to retrieve any newsgroup headers (or groups!)

I have subscribed to 2 news servers to see if this is a news server issue
(this microsoft one and news.tiscali.co.uk - my servers news groups) and It
will not allow me to download news
headers - it simply connects and thats it - no headers, nada

I have opened News ports 119 on my Netgear Wireless Router and in my mcafee
total protection 2007 firewall

I have altered my DNS to 2 Ip's which my ISP told me about to see if this
fixes the problem and still no luck

All I want to do is download some newsgroups - The system Connects /
Authorises and then nothing...

I have tried to use a different newsreader and still the same problem
(albeit Outlook express being my favourite)

I am running
Mcafee total protection 2007 (Which I have uninstalled until I fix the
problem)
I have opened all ports on my netgear firewall (I Know I know, but I am
trying to resolve the issue bit by bit!)
Microsoft Media Centre and all Service packs applied... and security patches

Are there some settings I am missing from somewhere? Do I need to
disable/enable
anything?

Any help greatly appreciated as this is driving me nuts!

Some thoughts.

Are you Subscribed to any groups?

To subscribe to a newsgroup
The benefit of subscribing is that the newsgroup is included in your Folders
list for easy access. You can subscribe to a newsgroup in any of the
following ways:

* When you add a news server, Outlook Express prompts you to subscribe to
newsgroups on that server.
* Click a news server name in your Folders list, and then click Newsgroups.
Select the newsgroup that you want to subscribe to, and then click
Subscribe. You can also unsubscribe here.
When you double-click a name in the Newsgroup list, a subscription is
automatically generated.

Notes
* When you view a newsgroup without subscribing to it, its name appears in
your Folders list. Right-click the name and then click Subscribe. For more
information about viewing a newsgroup without subscribing to it, click
Related Topics below.
* To view a newsgroup you subscribe to, click its name in the Folders list.
* To cancel your subscription to a newsgroup, click Newsgroups, click the
Subscribed tab, select the group you want, and then click Unsubscribe. You
can also right-click the newsgroup in your Folders list and then click
Unsubscribe.
--------

When you open a newsgroup, Outlook Express should automatically download new
headers. If you are using the default settings, only the most recent 300
headers will be downloaded.

OE | Tools | Options | Read tab |
Uncheck: Get [xxx] headers at a time

Get [xxx] headers at a time
[[Specifies whether to download the chosen number of messages when viewing a
newsgroup or to download all messages in the newsgroup.]]

Unchecking Get [xxx] headers at a time downloads all available new headers.
You can set it between 50 and 1000.

OE | Tools | Mark for Offline |
Make sure that nothing is selected

Click the Get next Headers button on the Toolbar while in a newsgroup.

Beats me.

Try posting at
microsoft.public.outlookexpress.general
or
microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6_outlookexpress

The OE gurus hang out there and know more than I do about OE and may be
better able to help.
