Problems booting with windows xp cd

Thomas Korsgaard

Hi,

A couple of days my windows installation broke down. There was a power
cut and everytime I try to reboot i get a blue screen and a reboot half
way throug start up. I cant start in either of the safemodes provided.
This results in a blue screen and reboot.

I run a dual boot system, with Fedora Core 4 linux and Win XP. And my
bootloader is Grub, and I'm able to boot into Linux.

I have tried to put the my windows CD in to make a repair of windows.
But nothing happens. I get the message: Press any key to boot from CD,
and ater I press a key I get the message "Setup is investegating your
hardware set". This dissapears and I never get to the blue screen, where
I can delete partitions and perform installations.

What I'm I supposed to do?!
Any help is much appreaciated.

I don`t wish to appear spiteful, but winusers are often told to fix their OS
by using a linux CD. Won`t that work for you ?.

You mean to make a clean install of linux and the make a clean install
of windows? The problem is that I cant boot with my win XP cd. Will a
clean linux install change this?

No, it won`t help. Have you got a windows floppy disk ?. If you have, start
the computer with it. When you get to the A prompt, type fdisk /MBR (space
between k and /).
This will reset your master boot record, and you might be able to boot into
windows.
However it will remove the grub or lilo loader from the MBR. That will stop
you booting linux, until you fix it.

Hi,

I suggest you to download and install the Windows 98 startup disk in a
floppy disk from the web link I provide you below:

You may download from this web link if your PC is an OEM version,
http://1gighost.net/ohioman/boot98se.exe

You may download the boot disk from below web link if it is retail,
http://www.mbhs.edu/~jaosborn/boot98sc.exe

Copy the boot diks files to a floppy and use this floppy to start the PC.
You will reach command prompt. You may then type "fdisk"

Please follow the web article I provide you below to remove all the
partition from the PC and create them. You will have to format the partition
after you do this.
Note that you will loose the linux as well once you remove all the partition
from the PC. You will have to install linux later.

I have provided you the one suitable for Notebooks as I saw you are using
Laptop.

You may then install Windows XP and Linux. That should take care of the issue.

All the best,

Vikki
