problem with Word 2003 comments feature

M

Mick [MSFT]

A contractor that I'm working with has described the following problem:

"I am editing a document using Word 2003. I need to make comments using the
comments feature. Sometimes it works perfectly. Other times, I go to enter a
comment and another comment pops up in its place with the comment number of
the comment I am trying to write. Sometimes I enter a comment and half of it
disappears while I'm still typing it. I can use the arrow keys to get it
back, but it disappears before I get a chance to edit. If I enter the
missing text the original text comes back. Once I have finished a comment,
the comment balloons work, but I have a hard time editing the comments in
the reviewing pane. Sometimes the cursor appears, but I type text and
nothing happens. I tried writing the comment in a separate document and
pasting it into the new document. That works once in a while. I used various
batch files to clear temporary files from a number of places, but that has
no effect.

"I had similar, but different problems on another computer with Word XP. I
haven't found anything in Microsoft's Knowledge Base. Has anybody else
experienced these bizarre behaviors?"

Does anybody have any suggestions?

Thanks

Hi Mick,

Off-hand it sounds like an issue in the graphics driver.

- Does the problem still occur when he starts the computer in Safe
Mode?
- Did you try turning his hardware acceleration down a notch or two?
- Is his Office installation patched to SP-1?
- What have you tried?
