Problem with wmv files

Windows2000 SP3 and OfficeXP SP2

I insert a movie with the wmv-format and it plays allright when running the
presentation. Only no sound is to hear.
I can hear the sound fine when activating the movie directly outside PP.
Also I can use a workaround with linking to the file and having the Windows
Media Player starting to run the movie. But that doesn´t seem so elegant;-))

Is there any way to insert the movie and make pictures AND movie behave the
right way?

Many regards

I just did so and it said everything was correctly installed. Still no
sound;-))

The next thing to try is playing the WMV in the MCI Media Player, which
is what PPT uses to play media files.

http://www.soniacoleman.com/Tutorials/PowerPoint/multimedia.htm has
instructions in section 3 for how to test this. You'll go to Start/Run
and type in mplay32.exe or mplayer.exe, depending on your version of
Windows, and try to play the WMV from that player.

Also, check the information on INI settings (for Win98 and ME) or
registry settings (for Win2000 and XP) to ensure that yours look like
those.

Using mplay32.exe the movie is displayed but again without sound.

I went to the registry on my XP and the wmv-extenstion seems to be looking
right here.

The strange thing is that I can doubleclick on the file directly and the
sound is played correctly. Here it is Windows Media Player version 9 which
opens. Is is some kind of association which is wrong?

That's the acid test. If it doesn't play in mplay32.exe,
it's not going to play in PPT.

You might try rerendering the WMV. There may be something
in the settings which were used when it was first created
that is causing this problem.

Cool. It's always a good thing to check, though!

No. This happens because WMP is set up to play WMV files
for Windows. But PPT 2002 uses the MCI Media Player
(mplay32.exe) to play the files, not WMP. So, even though
the file plays okay in WMP, it doesn't mean that it will
play okay in PPT. Sorry.

It seems that I have found another workaround. Instead of inserting "a movie
or sound" I insert an object. Here I choose the Windows Media Player-object
and now the sound can be heard when running the presentation. Odd but it
works;-))

Thanks for all the help.

Yes, that forces the Windows Media Player to handle the file. Sorry, I
should have thought to suggest that earlier, so I'm glad you found it on
your own!
