The problem started after the daylight saving time change, but I do not
think it has anything to do with it.

This seems to be tide with a security update however nothing would say which
one. Have you applied all updates to Vista?

M

Mark

All Vista updates have been applied.

I list below the whole sequence of evants "for clarity" as requested in the
email I received.

When I close the Windows Mail program, it prompts me with:
"Windows Mail can compact the message store. This may take up to a few
minutes. OK or Cancel"
When I click OK, then:
"Compacting the Windows Mail database" message appears, but a few seconds
later when the progress bar is about 50% done, the following message
appears:
"Windows Mail has stopped working."
And then:
"Check online for a solution and restart the program" or "Restart the
program."
Clicking on Problem Details reveals the following explanations:

And then a popup appears with the following message:
"Windows Mail was closed. To help protect your computer, Data Execution
Prevention has closed Windows Mail. Click to learn more."

When I click Cancel to the very first prompt , Windows Mail shuts down with
no problems.

First, let's backup your mail store.

Make sure Windows Mail is NOT RUNNING.

Go to this folder:

C:\Users\XXXXXX\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail

XXXXXX = Your username

Backup the entire Windows Mail folder. You can simply copy it to your
desktop. Once you have verified the backup we can proceed.

From within the original folder, delete the following:

Backup folder
All files that start with edb

Then start Windows Mail and see what happens.

Thanks Justin.

The folder C:\Users\XXXXXXX
(I put my user name where the XXXXX are) has following folders:

Contacts, Desktop, Documents, Downloads, favorites, Links, Music, Pictures,
Saved Games, Searches, Videos.

I can't find:

C:\Users\XXXXXX\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail

You have more chance of getting people knowledgeable in Windows
Mail to help you if you post in the appropriate newsgroup:
microsoft.public.windows.vista.mail.

Have you tried the WMUtil program:

If you've received new email since your last back then do a new backup.

Once you're done then delete EVERYTHING from within the same folder you
deleted files last time. No worries, you can always restore your backup.

Now open the app and try to compact it. It if still can no do it then we
need to check the file permissions on your mail store files.

Question, did you perform a new install or an upgrade to Vista?

M

Mark

I didn't know such a newsgroup existed. Based on your advice I reposted to
that group.
