problem with windows explorer?

xp home sp2

i have a problem that seems to be getting worse. i have not been able to
find a fix for it as yet.
when i open a file to explore, a flashlight animation shows up and sometimes
freezes, and takes a long while before the files show up. also, it has a real
hard time with changing file views. when a jpeg file finally appears, even
though i have it set for thumbnail view, it will appear as a file and then
after a long while that freezes the computer, it will convert to a thumbnail
of the jpeg. im also having a hard time when saving images off the web.
computer freezes up after clicking save, perhaps for about 20 seconds, then
it completes the task.
in all of these cases, the freeze ups and delays are becoming longer.

ive scanned with windows defender, avira anti-virus, msn spysweeper,
malwarebytes, spybot and ca antispy, but can find nothing malicious.
(i do not use all these program for protection at the same time so it isnt a
conflict amongst them)

is there anything known about this and is there a solution?

tia.

Open Task Manager to the Processes tab and park it in a corner of your
monitor. Sort the processes so they appear in decreasing order of CPU
usage. Next time you see the waving flashlight, glance over to Task
Manager and see which process occupies the majority of your CPU time.

Start , Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services. Click on Windows
Image Acquision and check that the StartUp type is automatic and it has
started.

thank you.
that found the problem.
it appears an active protection exe from my anti-virus program was the
culprit.
i downloaded the newest version and did a clean install and it appears to
now be working ok. (so far)

Go here and download and run FixShell.

Give it a try. This script will fix the Explorer Shell.

thank you.
wow i wish that came with xp.
i could have saved a lot of time and worry (and mistakes) over the past few
years.

thank you.
i checked it and it is set on automatic and is started.
i didnt know that existed though, and upon exploring that list, right above
it was listed my anti-virus protection guard which was the problem.
so now i have another way of checking on it.
