problem with web page display

G

Guest

My Explorer is not showing some web pages properly. The background color is not displayed correctly. It is always white, even when the web page specifies a different color
Also it seems that table lines aren't displayed. This can be very confusing on some sites
One example is the google home page www.google.co
My browser does not display the lines and boxes around the links for Web, Images, Groups, etc. Only the text appears

Any help anyone

If you are not using win XP and are using a version less
to it (eg. win98, win me, win 2000, win 95) you can jump
into the add/remove programs through the control panel,
highlight the internet explorer program click on
add/remove or uninstall/reinstall button depending on your
os and there should be an option to repair it, you should
not have to do a full uninstall and reinstall, just a
repair.

What if you do have Win XP? My friend has this exact problem. He uninstalled IE and reinstalled IE 6.0, BUT still has the same problem. Any thoughts?

I went into edit/remove and there is no option to repair

I also have gone into Microsoft site: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/support/default.as

and the other problem is that when I click a spot to go to, the title comes up but nothing else, it is almost as if someone removed the inside and left me with the outside

Dell technitions have been no help what so ever. I am so frustrated, since I would like to access all of Microsoft Internet Explorer sites, but can not manage to communicate with anyone

Have you tried tools>internet options and hit the accessibility button on
the general tab?

Also start>settings>control panel accessibility.

Probably not but worth a look if you haven't so far. If any options for
either are set remove them.

Also check for spyware in case something has got onto your system without
your knowledge and screwed up parts of IE...

Sorry there's a quite a lot to go through. Links below.

I have seen something like this happen with Video card drivers. No idea why
it only affected IE... you'd think it would affect other stuff being part of
the video system but it did. Have you downloaded anything recently that
might affect video drivers like a DirectX update or whatever? Any new
drivers offered for your card? The latest NVIDIA driver is a disaster on
this machine, I've had to go back to an older version.

Dell seem to use some factory settings that affect IE badly... it may help
someone else answer if you remind us what machines you have.

No accessability options set. I note people are mentioning problems with Dell.
My system is a Dell Inspiron 8600 notebook with NVidea 5200. It sounds like it is either the Dell factory settings or the Nvidea drivers. Funny thought that only IExplorer is affected. I even downloaded the latest Mozilla browser and it works perfectly
I haven't yet downloaded any new drivers or anything, the system is not even a week old
And yes, Dell technical support haven't responded at all

Any more help anyone

From http://www.fjsmjs.com/OE/nolinks.htm

1. Click Start, and then click Run.

2. In the Open box, type:

regsvr32 urlmon.dll

3. Click OK, and then click OK again when you receive the following message:

DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll succeeded.

4. If that doesn't fix it, see this article:

http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/answers.htm#new_window

You can also try this:

Go to Start/run, and type SFC (SFC /SCANNOW for Win2K or WinXP).
Choose 'Extract One File From Installation Disk'.
Type oleaut32.dll, not worrying about its location. Then, click Start.

Next to 'Restore From', type in or browse for the file's location, which is
probably in the Win98 folder of your installation CD-ROM (typically
D:\Win98), or in your Windows\Options\Cabs folder, as the case may be.

Then, next to 'Save File In', enter C:\Windows\System, and click OK. System
File Checker looks for the file, saves it as you requested, and then tells
you that 'the file has been successfully extracted'.

You may need to reboot.

I appreciate everyones assistance, but I guess when I had to reinstall Windows XP Home something didn't click right with the instructions from Dell techies

I tried regsvr32 urimon.dll and that suceeded, but no help

I tried the other method and nothing happened when I pressed enter

I went to the web site, and once again I got to the page the header Internet Support was at the top but no contents, so no help

THis is really a crazy situation

I can get to Explorer, I can get to E-mails, but there is something that is not checked or done correctly

Even in Quicken, before I actually had lines between numbers, now all the numbers are run on sentences

Thanks for your efforts

I will call the folks from Dell tomorrow, and try for another 8 hours of transferring and holding

You are a life saver.
I did as you suggected and went to start-control panel-accessibilities and found under display high contrast clicked. I unclicked it and everything came back as before. The colors are back on msn.com, the sparations are back on QUicken.
I will now check to see if I can get any content on the pages for support from Explorer. But At least I do not have to try to explain to all of Dells overseas customer techies what I am talking about.

Many thanks for your time and for the solution.

Pleased to be able to help, sometimes the simple things work although not
often enough.

I'm a bit curious how this happens because it takes a conscious effort to
change those settings, but it does seem to happen all on it's own
occasionally. Of course that's why it's so easily overlooked.

Hmm, hold down a shift key for 8 seconds seems to be the easiest way to get
at the properties... I suppose there's a vague chance someone could do that
and panic... <g>

The reason for blurry images is that IE6 is set up to resize the
images based on the Display DPI setting. Many laptops are shipped with
higher DPI than the default and set IE6 to resize the image.

You can either set the DPI to the default (Normal - 96) or remove
IE6's UseHR registry key to deactivite image resizing. Here are the
relevant information (from Microsoft Knowledge Base):

Images Scaling in Internet Explorer (hi-res)
============================================

How to Activate Scaling
Internet Explorer 6 and later automatically adjusts the scale on
higher resolution systems when the DPI setting is higher than 96 DPI
and the "UseHR" registry value is added to the registry. These are
usually done by the manufacturers of higher resolution systems.

Set the DPI
These are the steps for changing the DPI setting on your system.

Right-click the Windows desktop to display the context menu.
Click Properties on the context menu to display the Display Properties
dialog.
Click the Settings tab on the Display Properties dialog to display the
Settings tab.
Click the Advanced button on the Settings tab to display the monitor
properties dialog.
Select a DPI setting in the Display frame of the monitor properties
dialog to change the DPI setting.
Restart your system to allow the changes to take effect.
Add the UseHR Registry Entry
The UseHR value is added to the Main key under "Internet Explorer" as
follows:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main
Right Click in the right pane and select New | DWORD value and set its data
to 00000001
