problem with system restore

I am facing the same type of problem as the one described
below: I upgraded my drive from a 20G to a 80G using
Maxtor utility called Maxblast3 which copied everything
from the old drive to the new drive. Everything seems to
work perfect except for the system restore which refuses
to start. Apparently the service can't start because the
specified path is invalid but I checked and the file is
there (c:\win\system32\svchost.exe). I went on
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_abc.htm as suggested
but I could not find any indication as to what can I do
to fix the problem.
Thanks in advance,

Changed boot drive from 40G to 120G.
Transferred 'everything' using Drive image 2000. Every is
perfect except system restore. When started get the
message System Restore Application has encountered a
problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the
inconvenience. Error message
AppName: rstrui.exe AppVer: 5.1.2600.1106 ModName:
srrstr.dll
ModVer: 5.1.2600.1142 Offset: 000095fa

The system restore tab on 'my computer' properties gives
the message "Run a DLL as an App has encountered a
problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the
inconvenience." AppName: rundll32.exe AppVer:
5.1.2600.0 ModName: srrstr.dll
ModVer: 5.1.2600.1142 Offset: 00009765

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Another thought check start/administrative tools/computer
management/services see if system restore is started and
on automatic right click system restore properties to set
to automatic - manual - disable. And when you right click
my computer/ properties system restore tab you get a DLL
error? Do you have norton utilities or something you can
check registery with? If not spybot S&D (freeware) has a
check internals option in advanced mode that will check
for bad paths etc. I'll keep my thinking hat on.

Maxblast is the pits I tried it & copied all except some software I had to
activate & Norton 2004 had to be reactivated & yes the restore didn't work I
used Norton Ghost 2003 & its fine MAXBLAST SUCKS! only bad thing ghost &
maxblast don't do is create the 7.8mb unallocated space it needs & can cause
problems best to install fresh use old hard drive as slave so you can copy
files.

Hello Lou, I think you got it right this time : I didn't think of disabling
system restore using computer management/services/system restore right
clic/properties/deactivate ; the tab from system properties was not
available so I was looking at other solutions. Once deactivated, I could use
Alex Nichol MS MVP (Windows Technologies) 's idea and delete the content of
system volume information and reboot (Alex is from the winxp general
newsgroup). Once rebooted, the tab in system properties for system restore
was available again so I enabled system restore and created a new restore
point which I called "system restore repaired".
Thanks again for all your help,
By the way, there is a posting saying that Maxtor's maxblast3 utility is
garbage (from Dr. Sysop), I' m sorry to say that I don't agree with him, I
used that utility and everything went very fine except for the system
restore. But, looking back at the whole issue, I think the problem would
have been avoided if system restore is turned off before the copying process
and enabled again after from the new drive. This is something I will
remember in the future.
Anyway, thanks,

Glad everything worked out finally. I use maxblast 3 to
format drives and just got systemworks pro with ghost and
backup everything windows, programs whole drive to cd,
works great. I have only had computer since april but
leave system restore off because most of the problems I
created it wouldn't fix anyway, and ghost cut down the
reinstall eveything from 6-8 hours to 15 minutes.

I was able to get around my system restore problem by
disabling system restore before doing the disk copy. Then
after using Maxblast 3 for the disk copy, and
reconfiguring the new drive as the master, I could re-
enable system restore. After this system restore doesn't
crash. However, after the disk copy, the restore points
are not retained. Once the new drive was up, I created a
restore point and went from there.
