Problem with Service Pack 2

Hello,

I recently built a standard 32-bit computer and installed windows xp on
one partition, left a partition open for data, and on a third partition
installed suse 9.3. At that time we did not have the internet. When
we got the internet, I installed service pack 2 on my machine (by
running windows update), since the latest versions of visual studio
require service pack 2. Before installing the sp, windows update
installed several other programs and patches and things. I was not
aware that sp is a cause of many crashes on many machines. I assumed
that such a widely distributed patch as the service pack 2 would be
quite reliable.

When the sp2 installation was complete, I booted the system to windows
and it got stuck at the blue windows xp splash screen. A few times it
actually played the sound played at startup, but I could not access
even the task manager (ctrl-alt-del did nothing!). After several
attempts to make the machine boot windows, I realized that it was
futile and reinstalled windows from my cd (without the sp). Luckily, I
did not lose any data because I had backed it all up to the other
partition, and all that I lost were installed programs (which are
easily reinstalled). However, upon reinstalling the sp again, once
again I had the same problem.

I have a legal version of windows xp which I acquired through msdnna
(or something similar) through the university where I study. I have no
idea how to install sp2 so that it doesn't suck, but if anyone knows,
please respond.

Thanks for your help!

Nate

It is quite reliable, but nothing is perfect and much depends on the
system being upgraded.

Hi Nate - Well, take a look here:

The most usual cause of problems with SP2 installations is that the machine
being installed to is infected with "malware". You might also want to take
a look at my Blog, Defending Your Machine, addy in my Signature below for
some detailed help and advice about dealing with that.

I've seem more problems occur with the WindwosUpdate version of Service Pack
2 than the network download version. WindowsUpdate version usually only
downloads the modules required and seem to "miss" files. Download the
network download version of SP2 and look at "slipstreaming" it onto new XP
install CD. "Autostreamer" is a excellent utility to help you with this.

Hello everyone,

SP2 finally runs on my machine. I ended up playing with update.sys and
all of those things, but what finally solved the problem was a
reinstall of windows with a cd that has service pack 2 on it already.
Good thing my mp3s were on the other partition. But, some of my
drivers don't work with sp2.

I have a new solution. I like to call it Suse. Still hasn't crashed,
and compiles c++ a lot faster than visual studio. Gotta love emacs.

You just gotta config it!
