Problem with Repairing mail.pst in Outlook 2000

Yesterday I downloaded into my MS Outlook an e-mail message , which had a lot
of jpgs attached. I wish Sympatico had rejected that message, because now all
the folders and contacts are inaccessible. I have tried the following:

1. in Outlook: Help - Detect and Repair (no change)
2. in DOS: scanreg/restore to reset to the previous day's settings - no
change to Outlook

3. Using Scanpst.exe
Phase 1 completes, then it jumps to Phase 4 and completes. Then I get a
message: "An error has occurred which caused the scan to be stopped. No
changes have been made to the scanned file."
Does this mean that I can't recover anything from the corrupted mail.pst file?

If only I could gain access to the folders so I could delete the offending
files. The last time I backed up the file was in July, which I have imported
temporarily. The mail.pst file has become 2,062,048MB!

Thanks for your help,
Terri

I did discover the problem with having a pst file greater than 2GB. So I used
the MS program to crop the oversized file. However, when I ran the
Scanpst.exe program and got to the REPAIR screen, my computer froze and the
program did not respond when I clicked on the REPAIR button.

Is there a way to get to the REPAIR phase without going through 8 phases of
scanning before hand? Why is my computer freezing when I click on REPAIR?
