Problem with Outlook Discussion Group Web site

Jim

This is not an Outlook problem but it is a problem with the Microsoft
Discussion Groups web site. I don’t know how to contact the “webmaster†for
that – maybe somebody from Microsoft will see this posting and pass it along.

When I go to http://www.microsoft.com/office/community/en-us/default.mspx
and under Office Discussion Groups select “Outlook†and Click on click on
General Questions (or I think any of the options), the page that loads hangs
up my Internet Explorer 8 and I have to restart the IE8 from a non-responsive
state.

IE 8 hangs up at the following point. (There may be an error in the details
because I had to copy the image with a screen capture program and manually
type the url.)
Downloading picture
http://c.microsoft.com/trans_pixel....osfot.public.outlook.general%26lang%3den%26cr.....

There is probably more to that URL listing but that is all the space
available in the IE 8 status line.

I was able to get to this page to post this item by typing in “Outlook†in
the "Search For" box on
http://www.microsoft.com/office/community/en-us/default.mspx and then posting
this as a new message.

Now you understand why you should be using a newsreader client instead of
the web interface.

The pages load fine here - it may be a setting in IE (it tries to protect
you from everything and I disabled most of that crap) or something else you
have installed - could be firewall or antivirus blocking something or an IE
add-in causing problems.

You can access these groups using a newsreader pointed to
msnews.microsoft.com or from one of the many forums that include the
content, including http://forums.slipstick.com/

I don't normally post to these Microsoft help groups using a browser,
however, I copied your link (if I click it, Opera takes me there instead of
Internet Explorer), and pasted it into MS Internet Explorer 8. I then signed
in with a 'passport.com' ID that I have. And here I am, posting a followup
to your article. So there is something wrong with your installation of MSIE8.
Don't know what it might be.

I should also note that I have never had trouble with these help groups
using a regular newsreader to access them. These groups are not a "web site",
but Usenet "discussion groups", or "newsgroups", and can be more reliably
accessed when using an NNTP client than when using an HTTP client.

Try setting IE8's compatibility mode.

I think it might be the phishing setting or smart screen or possibly
something in the internet zone. IE8 is evil and locks too much down.

Spoken like a true advocate of the Microsoft "Let the application do all
kinds of fun, even if dangerous, things" position.

No, I don't need Microsoft to decide what I can and cannot do - I lead a
boring internet life and all of my surfing is on mainstream sites. I use a
firewall and antivirus, I don't open strange attachments I'm not expecting.
I keep windows up-to-date. I don't need a netnanny and I don't want to add a
bunch of sites to the trusted zone.

IE8's defaults cause problems with my banking sites and the admin section of
my blog. I get annoying warnings when I try to do simple things (like
paste). When I change the security settings, IE forgets them on the next
reboot... firefox works fine and I'm using it about half the time now (up
from about 10% a few months back).

Thanks for the help everyone, and the interesting discussion.

Things work OK today with IE8. But I'll try the Newsreader approach.
That's all new to me.
