Problem with new XP Pro install... extremely slow

I have a Dell Dimension with a Pentium IV @ 2.4Ghtz and 1GB of RAM.

I slipstreamed SP2 with my installation disc for XP Pro. After the
installation
process finally finished, every time it takes litterally 12 minutes from cold
boot until the desktop appears and is ready for use. Then any click I make,
takes well over a minute for the context menu to appear.

When I bring up task manager CPU usage is at 100% with taskmgr process
bouncing between 66 and 99%, and various other windows processes using
up the rest.

Nothing has been installed but Windows XP Pro. When I went to WindowsUpdate,
I started the update process over a 3,300kbps dsl connection at around
9:00pm ET
on Feb 18. It found 93 "Criticals", 10 "Software", and 2 "Hardware". I chose
to
install all 93 criticals, 7 software, and both hardware for a total of 102 @
approximately 156MB. It started Monday at 9 pm and here it is Wednesday at
10 pm
and it's chugging along at "Installing ...(Update 88 of 102)..."

Also, the Display Properties control panel will not open up whether I right
click the
desktop or try to enter through Display on the main control panel. When I do
either,
I get the little hourglass, but when it's gone the Display properties window
never
appears.

There has got to be a reason for this but I can't find it. This machine was
working
fine with WinXP Home before I formatted the HDD and installed Pro.

I am lost and need help!!!!!!!
This process started 9:00pm ET

You booted to xp pro cd,new install, deleted the partition (xp home),created
one,then xp formatted & installed.You might also,go to run,type:cmd In cmd
type:DiskPart In DiskPart, type:list disk Type:list volume Check if older
partitions
exist,delete if so.Also,with XP SP2 installed from (slipstreamed cd),youre
down-
loads from windows update should be about 30% of youre amount listed, seems
like that update is for xp w/o SP1,& w/o SP2,something is wrong with youre
installation/& xp cd....So much for slipstreaming..Also,at 3.500kbps,youre
down-
load timw should only be 5 minutes or so,10 at most, exit update,it will
restart
at what wasnt downloaded, end any program that runs over an hour.

This does not help me at all. The main issue is the extreme slowness of the
new install. I figure if it wasn't so damn slow, the updates would load fine.
I need help finding the root cause of the slowness, then I will move onto the
updates.

I have found the problem!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Somehow in the BIOS setup the CPU mode got switched to Compatible instead of
Normal.

Once I switched it to normal after rebooting it is relatively lightning quick.
