Problem with layering (ordering of objects)

I'm using PowerPoint 2003 SP2. On a slide I have inserted a .jpg image. I
need to put a red box around a part of the image to highlight that area, but
when I drag the red box over the .jpg, it disappears. The ordering menu is
grayed out when the .jpg is selected, so I can't "send it to the back." I
have ordered the red square to "bring to front", but it still disappears when
it gets entirely over the .jpg. Any ideas?

I'm sorry I can't because it has proprietary information in it. What I can
tell you is that I'm writing curriculum for a new software application. The
screen shot was sent as a .bmp file, and I changed it to .jpg using Corel
Paint Shop Pro X. Then I inserted the .jpg into a PowerPoint slide using
Insert>Picture>From file. Apparently, it is being seen as a "picture" because
when I double click it, the Format Picture dialog box displays.

A few suggestions.
1. Do a cold reboot of the PC and test again.
2. Update your video drivers.
3. Reduce hardware acceleration for the video card.

Thanks, Austin. I'll try those.

As a test, click the JPG then hold down Ctrl while you drag the jpg a bit.
That'll create a copy of it.

Try working with the copy.

If you can now do what you want re ordering and such, let us know.

Have you by any chance inserted the picture into the background? What
happens if you copy and paste another picture (or even the same picture)
onto the page and try again?

Hello JJS:

For what it may be worth, using PPt 2007, I did what you are trying to do
w/PPt2003. Works fine with this later version. (Inserted a jpg followed
by a NO fill rectangle w/a RED line border Dragged the box, jpg stayed put.
Moved rectangle in-front-of and behind.)
