Problem with Ipanel deluxe...

V

versus

Trying to to hook up desktop comp with p4s133 MB (Ipanel deluxe
installed) with ASUS L3400 laptop via IR.
Both running Windows XP Home Edition, both having IR recievers
properly installed (on the list in hardware devices and working
properly)
However when brought close together only desktop shows IR icon in the
tray and it eventually dissapears after a while. Laptop shows no icon
whatsoever. Both have "display conncetion" activated. I've even tried
sending a file from desktop, but to no avail.
With desktop I can only change transfer speed (up to 115,200 bps)
while I can select number of values for 2 transcievrs (A and B) and
speeds up to 4Mbit/s with laptop.
values for the transcievers are

Dell T-97
HP HSDL-1100/2100
HP HSDL-2300/3600
IBM 31T1100
IBM SC-20H2987
Sharp RY5HD01/KD01
Sharp RY6FD11E
Siemens IRMS/T6400
SIR Receiver
TI TSLM100
Vishay TFDS-6000
Vishay TFDS-6500

What values should I use for A and B to be able to communicate with
IPanel Deluxe from desktop.

The Ipanel connector has both SIR and CIR pins on it. So, it is hard to
say which is used by the Ipanel. The Super I/O chip on the motherboard
is a ITE 8707, and the closest downloadable datasheet is for the 8712:

http://www.iteusa.com/productInfo/Download.html#IT8712F (grab 0.6 or 0.7)

There is mention in the datasheet of what modulation frequencies are
available and what protocols are supported. Perhaps that will give
you some hints as to what is supported or possible.

There is some information on IRDA standards here. They mention an
Async low rate option and the 4Mb/sec option, and they look separate
from one another. Your laptop is going to have to "gear down" to
be able to talk to the Asus motherboard.

http://www.irda.org/standards/standards.asp

There is mention in Google of range problems with the Ipanel, so
you will have to get the units close to one another. One way to
test IR devices, is to photograph them with a video camera. A
CCD video camera can see into the infrared wavelengths, and when
you press the button on a remote, the video camera will see the
light. So, you could use the video camera to at least verify
that both ends have light output.

I don't know anything about those transceivers, but here are a couple
of datasheets from semiconductor.agilent.com for the HP units:

http://literature.agilent.com/litweb/pdf/5988-6259EN.pdf
http://literature.agilent.com/litweb/pdf/5988-9347EN.pdf

Basically, all these Agilent datasheets tell me, is that the
transceivers can support 115Kb/sec or 4Mb/sec, but there is a
discrete selection process to use one rate or the other.

So, you need to get the two ends to agree on baud rate (and possibly
modulation frequency). Judging by the ITE datasheet, you should
be aiming for 115Kb/sec or less.

I've never used IRDA, and don't know which options are considered
popular for computer use.
