Problem with GS Wavetable SW Synth

If I enter control panel | Sound and Audio Devices | Audio, the MIDI music
playback field is empty. I have selected the Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth
and OK which closes the settings window. If I re-enter the settings the field
is again empty, resulting in no windows sounds. I have followed the advice of
threads found by in this forum such as ... Open below website (URL) and
scroll down to and click "Where did
my Sounds go?"
*Top-10*Troubleshooting Windows XP, Tweaks and Fixes for Windows XP
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/top10faqs.htm... but this does not work
either. I am running XP home with all service pack and updates installed.

Can someone please furnish me with a real solution to this problem.

Thanks

It could be that the signs correctly point to a file that has incorrectly
moved, disappeared or been renamed. in my XP Home (up to date) it is:
c:\windows\system32\drivers\gm.dls
(and there is a gmreadme.txt alongside it, both stamped March 31, 2003 2:00
PM).

I have this exact same problem on not one system, but two. The same symptom
is happening under the "Voice" control panel for the "Voice Playback" default
device. I can set it to the one setting that is listed, but if I hit "OK"
and then come back in, it is empty, just like the MIDI setting Phil mentions
below (which is also occurring on my systems.)

To add more confusion, if I press the "Test Hardware" button under "Voice",
it shows everything working fine. (Both mic and playback work.) Press "OK"
and come back - Voice Playback and MIDI device are blank again, and still no
sounds. It's as if Windows thinks the selection is invalid when "OK" is
pressed and resets them.

For note, the Kelly's Korner settings didn't help. (Been through all of the
suggestions there.) Additionally, the Windows default sound settings appear
fine under the "Sounds" tab. The "play" button just never becomes active
when they are selected. So it doesn't appear that the sound files themselves
are affected.

I'm taken a look for the files Chris mentions below. Both the library and
README file are present and appear not to have been modified recently. (Both
systems used to work fine for over 1 1/2 years, making me believe that
perhaps this was caused by an application of some sort.)

Reinstalling the sound card vendor drivers does not fix the situation.
Booting from the Windows XP drive looks like it wants to start an entirely
new installation. These are both active systems which I can't afford to
flush clean.

Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

I have tried every solution to solve this problem, and eventually resorted to
paying the Microsoft support chagre in an attempt to avoid a system reload.
Unfortunatly, after 4-5 hours on the phone with then ant trying numerous
things, THEY FAILED!

I honestly believe there is a flaw in XP that Microsoft either can't fix or
can't be bothered to fix as this is the second time I have suffered this
problem and on both occasions everything works fine for about a year, then
bang.

I would say (in their defence) that Microsoft covered the cost of the phone
bill and refunded the support charge as they did not resolve the issue,
however anyone suffering this problem should accept the fact that a full
reload may be the only way of fixing this problem.. Sorry
