Problem with Firewall.[That ain't on]

Dear All,

I've come across a weird thing here, and I don't know where to turn, except
here...

I'm running a few machines on a local network, sitting behind a router (with
built in firewall), one of my machines, is showing symptoms of having a
firewall on, although none are present (I was testing some software that was
failing, so I switched off the firewall, and uninstalled Zonealarm, that I
had installed, and don't worry, there is nothing sensitive on the machine).
I can ping the machine, but when I've done it, it comes up "Request Timed
out." for the first one, and then I get 3 replies....I'm confused....

Because I'm working with Active Directory and domains, I've been trying a
piece of software that allows me to force an update on Policies from my
machine, and that also is saying either the machine is down, or it is
firewalled.....

Sometimes I've tried to connect with TightVNC, and it comes up unable to
connect, try again, and it connects....

There is a problem somewhere, but I don't know where to start to look...

Can anybody help me?

Regards
Paul.

Since you had ZoneAlarm on there, unless you followed their specific
removal instructions (not just used Add/Remove Programs) there may still
be remnants of it. Or the XP SP2 Windows Firewall may be on. Or your
antivirus may have a firewall component.

ZA uninstall:

This first timeout is because the system has to ARP in order to find the mac
address matching the IP address.
