problem with curly brackets

Help... I had inserted diagrams in my essay - now it shows ...

{SHAPE \* MERGEFORMAT}

instead of the diagrams and i don't know how to get my diagrams back. right
mouse click shows nothing. In the same document Endnote references are
showing in an incorrect format to previuos, and the page numbers are in
'source-code' i.e.{PAGE NUM PAGES}.

does anyone know WHY this has happened and how I can get my diagrams back?

right-click and Toggle Field Codes. Or hit Alt-F9. This will switch the
diagrams, EndNote references, and page numbers back to showing field
results instead of codes. All those things are maintained via fields.
