Problem with chkdsk

Craig

I am doing a regular maintenance cleaning of my Dell computer which is a
year old.
Two weeks ago, I installed a 200 GB Maxtor drive as D-drive.
Computer (OS is WinXP Pro SP2) runs fine.

What is happening is that checkdsk was progressing up to about 4/5 (almost
80%) and then the bar did not move at all.
I repeated the chckdisk again. Getting the same result. So I could not
complete chkdsk on D-drive.
I wonder how to fix this drive. The drive is working fine and I am using
everyday.

is the 200 gig new?
According to a article I read, it can take hours just for 70 gig.
200 is definitley bigger. Walk away, take a break, watch TV, whatever.
If it never finishes, I might be worried.
Let it do its thing.

What is happening is that checkdsk was progressing up to about 4/5 (almost
80%) and then the bar did not move at all.

The % complete and the bar are a _very_ rough measure of the actual %
complete. It's normal for the number to change rapidly at some points
and very slowly at some points.

So the fact that the bar "stops" at 80% of a 200 GB disk doesn't
necessarily indicate a problem.

You could try doing a Ctrl-Alt-Del and bringing up the Processes tab
before starting the chkdsk. Then watch the system resources and see
if there's a change when that bar seems to stop.
