Problem with CD/DVD drives

N

Hi,

I'm having recent trouble with both my CD-RW (Lite-On LTR52246S) and DVD-RW
(Pioneer DVR-106D) drives. Since they both crapped out at the same time I'm
suspecting a Windows problem. Neither drive can read burned data CD's. In
a nutshell, the DVD drive will play everything except for burned data CD's,
and the CD drive will only recognize audio CD's (burned or commercial) but
nothing else. When I insert a disc in either drive, my Windows explorer
looks as if there's no disc in the drive at all, yet when I go to eject the
unrecognized disc, I get an "There was an error trying to unmount the drive"
message. The only coinciding event I can think of is that this problem
seems to start around the time I installed installation the latest version
of iTunes and a recent Windows update (Win2K Pro). Any help would be
appreciated.

Thanks,
Nate

Check Event Viewer and Device Manager for errors and or non-starting
devices.

Hey Dave,

Thanks for the advice. The device manager looked fine, however when I
checked out the event viewer I saw a bunch of errors and warnings. I'm not
really sure what to look for but a couple that came to my attention are:

The driver has detected that device \Device\Ide\IdePort0 has old or
out-of-date firmware. Reduced performance may result.

The device, \Device\CdRom1, has a bad block.

Any clues there?

Thanks,
Nate

When you view the logged events in Event Viewer in the upper right corner,
third button down is a copy to clipboard, then you can paste in the body of
a reply message.

Please do so for each of the different system events so we can see all of
the event detail.
