Problem with captions and heading numbering

Guest

I have a document containing captions of inserted pictures. I later added to
the end of this document some part of another document. Then I created a new
caption, but Word created not following caption number, e. g. 23, but started
again from number one. I tried to update fields, but without any effect.
Secondly, my documet have numbered headings. Chapters are numbered from 1 to
12 (level 1). In chapter 1 I have also levels 2 and 3, so numbering is 1.1,
1.2, 1.2.1, 1.2.2 etc. When I tried to make heading of 2nd level in chaprer
10, I did not get heading 10.1, 10.2, 10.3 etc., but heading 1.3 e.i.
following heading from chapter 1.
Can anyone help me, plase? Many thanks in advance.

Hi Milan

I suggest you solve the heading numbering problem first, and then solve the
caption problems. That is because the caption numbering depends on the
heading numbering.

For information on how to set up the numbering, see
How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in your Microsoft Word
document
http://www.ShaunaKelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html

You'll have to be very careful that you *never* click within a Heading 2 or
Heading 3 paragraph to try to edit the numbering scheme. Always click within
a Heading 1 paragraph.

And, go to the problem paragraph, triple-click to select it, do ctrl-q and
ctrl-spacebar. That will remove any direct formatting that might be causing
problems.

After you have solved the numbering problem, do ctrl-a and then F9 to update
all fields.

If you still have a problem, you'll need to investigate to find out what the
problem is. Select the whole of one of the captions that works properly,
click within it and do Shift-F9. You should see something like { STYLEREF 1
\s } - { SEQ Figure \* ARABIC \s 1 }. Now, do the same for one of the
problem captions. You should be able to see how the problem one differs from
the one that is working OK. For more information about the switches, see
Word's help under STYLEREF and SEQ fields.

Hope this helps.

I have a similar problem, but I don't see you answered it for me in this
response. I have figures with chapter numbers in the captions. While I can
get the chapter numbers to be correct, the figure number continuously
restarts. I made the chapter number to change on heading 9 because I was
using lower heading numbers alreading in the document, and I wonder if those
other headings in between are what is messing me up. Thanks for any help.
(I am also wondering if there is a way to have two caption styles in the
same document. I don't want chapter numbers in my introduction. Thanks
again.)

Hi scc r&p

To be able to help you out here, I think we will need to know:
1. What style are you using for your chapter numbers (eg Heading 1)?

2. What do you want the numbers in your figure captions to look like? For
example:
Chapter 1
Figure 1-1
Figure 1-2
Chapter 2
Figure 2-1
Figure 2-2
Figure 2-3

As I said--the chapters are associated with heading 9. And yes my captions
look something like that. Figure I-1; Figure I-2; Figure II_1; Figure II-2
etc.

Hi

If you are using the Heading 9 style for your chapter headings, then tell
the captions to include the chapter number based on the Heading 9 style.

However, it seems odd to me that one would need 8 levels of numbering
*before* the chapter heading.

What is more usual is to use Heading 1 as the style for the chapter
headings. And tell the captions to include the chapter number derived from
the Heading 1 style.

Hope this helps.
