problem with automatic language detection on word

I am using microsoft word and it keeps detecting the language as english(us)
when I need english(uk).I have changed the default setting but this does not
seem to work for long.Is there a way of removing english(us) from the
language list so that it is never detected?I have tried changing the language
settings on the main control panel option but this does not work either.
