Problem with Auto Update KB93M68

After installing Microsoft's latest automatic update (KB93M68) for Windows
XP Version 7, and restarting, I was no longer able to install certain
programs (in this case Java), since I continued to receive the message that
I did not have access to the needed files (I am the admin, and the only user
on a standalone PC). The problem is critical, preventing me from updating
and using one of my main apps, E*Trades Market Trader. I could only undo the
damage by uninstalling the fix (dated May 9 I believe) through the control
panel. The problem happened on my laptop, but the same fixes, applied to my
desktop, caused no such problems. Using MS XP SP2 with all the latest
updates (minus the last one, obviously), I would appreciate any
corroboration of this problem, and a fix, if possible. Thanks in advance.

Hi Abradaxis,

I think you mean KB931768. If so, uninstall the patch, using Add/Remove
Programs. Many reported similar issues yesterday.

Well, Terry, if you call spending hours trying to recover a lost environment
and
lost time trading because of Microsoft's crappy fix a 'whimsical' motivation
for my frustrations, you are right!! Your instructions to remove the
defective patch was already reported in my initial posting. So, for now, I
am up and running.
But how do I proceed from this point on to just continuing to whimsically
apply
Microsoft's updates whenever they appear with no fear they will permanently
disrupt my system beyond the point of unrecoverabillity? Do I have a
reasonable expectation that the problem will be corrected in a future fix?
Believe it or not, some of my most knowledgeable friends say that I should
just ignore all these weekly security updates, since they often do more harm
than good. And you are not talking to a Microsoft hater; just someone that
wants to spend his time doing work ON the computer instead of WORKING ON THE
COMPUTER so I can get some work done. Any positive response or assistance in
being able to continue applying fixes without fear of frying would be
appreciated.
