Problem with Asus A7N8X Deluxe

S

Shogun

After installing a new processor (AMD Athlon XP 3000+) and another 512 DDRAM
(totalsize now 1.0 Gb) the system after a while - when using several
programs (IE, Kazaa etc) - suddenly stops. CPU temperature 65 C°

I use a Zalman CNPS 6000 AMD XP Cooler.

Anyone an idea what is happening?

. CPU temperature 65 C°

That is on the high side. Even the retail HSF shouldn't go above the
high 50'sC. Atleast it never has for me on several boxes. I believe
the HSF needs to be reinstalled.

Here are some specifications, maybe you or someone else can tell me what to
do ..

SOME BIOS SPECIFICATIONS ....

CPU External Frequency: (166 MHZ)
CPU Frequency Multiple Setting: (Auto)
CPU Frequency Multiple: (13,0 x)
System Performance: (Optimal)
Memory Frequency: (by SPD) **
Resulting Frequency: (200 MHz)

** Note: By selecting "Auto" Resulting Frequency becomes 166 MHz instead of
200 MHz

FSB Spread Spectrum: (0,50%)
CPU VCore Setting: (Auto)
CPU VCore: 1,650 V)

SOME SYSTEM INFORMATION:

Processor: x86 Family 6 Model 10 Stepping 0 Authentic AMD ~2162 MHz

BIOS Version / Date:
Phoenix Technologies, LTD Asus A7n8X Deluxe ACPI BIOS
Rev. 1002 - Beta 006, 28-01-2003

SMBIOS version: 2.2

Total Physical Memory: 1024 Mb

MEMORY USED:

Modules what i have placed on my MB are from VERIDATA
2 x 512 MB DDRAM PC3200 400 MHz

Some questions i want to ask ...

Do i have to download another BIOS-version? If so please give me the link
....
Is the problem occured by the type of memory?
Are there other things what can cause this crashing of my system?
How can it be that the temp. of the CPU is running up to more than 68 C°?
Hardware Monitor is levelled at 72 C° according to the BIOS settings

Please help me with this ..

Does it run any better if you run the ram in sync of the FSB?
Memory Frequency [100%] (instead of SPD/Auto)

Have you tried running memtest86? You could define the ram timings in
the BIOS and lower them a bit to see if that helps, if the ram is rated
2-2-2-5 try something like 2.5-3-3-6 (6-3-3-2.5 in BIOS from top down)
for starters, run memtest86/prime95 after each change.

Your CPU does seem a tad warm, you sure you didn't put the heatsink on
backwards? (happens to a lot of builders) see.. http://tinyurl.com/3ue5

Is it normal that the 3000+ has only 2162 MHz?
My 2400+ had about the same MHz as far i could remember ....
The Cooler i use is a Zalman CNPS 6000 AMD XP and shoukd work for all
speeds.
The fanspeed is about 2500 ... Should that not be higher?

Probably about right, 166MHz * 13, right?
My 2400+ had about the same MHz as far i could remember ....

2800+ TBred is the fastest clocked at 166*13.5 = 2.25GHz. Not sure what the
2400+ is supposed to be... but there's also a 2700+ and a 2600+, so I would
guess at most, it would be 166MHz*12 = 2.0GHz.

2500 could be right, the blower on my Aero7+ is currently at 2500rpm.

As long as the fan puts out enough pressure to pass air though the HS
fins it should be OK at that speed, I run my CPU fan as low as 1800 RPM
with a Barton @ 2.3GHz, it's a Vantec Aeroflow with a CoolerMaster
adjustable 70mm blower fan.

The Model numbers/MHz gets confusing!
I'll just post this...

__Model Name_______MHz_FSB x Mult
Athlon XP 1500+ - 1333 (133x10.0)
Athlon XP 1600+ - 1400 (133x10.5)

Athlon XP 2000+ - 1667 (133x12.5)
Athlon XP 2100+ - 1733 (133x13.0)
Athlon XP 2200+ - 1800 (133x13.5)
Athlon XP 2400+ - 2000 (133x15.0)
Athlon XP 2600+ - 2133 (133x16.0)

I am using the variable fan thingy in the BIOS. My stock fan used to run at
4k revs all the the time, now it runs at about 2500 unless the CPU gets
above 50C, then it cranks back up to 4000 rpm.

My Stock cooler will keep the CPU at about 32C running on hi-speed at idle.
Running at 2500 revs, it idles at about 38C.

By the way, my config is A7N8X 2.0 with Barton 2500 running at 200 x 10.5,
only one case fan (beside the one in the power supply), sucking the air out
of the back.

Hi Mark

Is that what you are doing in the bios also possible in my case?
And if, so where i can configure those settings? Can you guide me a littel

Q-Fan was already DISABLED in the BIOS ... I leaved it so ...

The temperature is much higher according to the measures of the BIOS than
according at ASUS Probe:

BIOS: CPU: 70° C !!, MB: 42° C
PROBE: CPU: 56° C, MB: 46° C

What can possibly causes such jigh temperature?
The Zalman CNPS 6000 AlCu must be good enough for this AMD Athlon XP 3000+,
so i don't know anymore ...

Well the BIOS is supposed to read the CPU die temp, PCprobe reads the
CPU socket temp which is anywhere from 8C to 12C+ lower then the actual
CPU die temp.

If you want to read the CPU die temp in Windows download and install the
free Motherboard Monitor 5, http://mbm.livewiredev.com/download.html ,
program and set it up to use W83L785T-S Diode for CPU temp display, or
just get the INI files for MBM5 that are made for the A7N8X boards.
