problem with an ibm thinkpad

I have a family member in ohio who is experiencing problems with their thinkpad
ie multiple open windows of IE, and upon shutting it down their built in
mouse stopped working, they don't have access to an external mouse, and are
having problems booting to safe mode, I know nothing about thinkpads, how do
you go about booting to safe mode, so they can load an antivirus and etc???
F8 gives some menu about inturupting the normal boot and then stops

Hi,

How to start in Safe mode:
http://www.rickrogers.org/fixes.htm#Safe mode

Have them scan the system extensively for spyware, these can help:

AdawareII www.lavasoft.de
Spybot www.safer-networking.org

From MVP Richard Harper on cleaning up malware infested systems:
http://rgharper.mvps.org/cleanit.htm

This one can help you avoid these programs from being installed in the first
place:
Spyware Blaster: www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

Unexplained computer behavior may be caused by deceptive software

Loading an anti-virus package after the infection has occurred
is like closing the door after the horse has bolted. This Windows
installation is probably beyond repair. Start afresh with a brand
new installation. Remember to back up all important files before
allowing the disk to be formatted.

So nobody has any suggestions about the non working mouse, I didn't think a
virus
could do this, but what the heck do I know!, the multiple windows certainly
sounds like malware and or virus, and what's the deal with not being able to
boot to safe mode?? maybe it's my inexperience with the think[pad, and or
hers.

There could be many reasons why your mouse does not
work. The easist way is to buy a USB mouse. It uses a
different port and hence a different driver than your current
PS/2 mouse, and it's cheap. I bought an optical one last
week for $12.00.

Hi,

The malware, etc. currently on the system could be interfering with proper
operation of the pointing device. Clean it off the system and then see if
it's still a problem.

The link I provided you contains instructions on how to force a safe mode
boot without having to hit F8 at boot.

Well I spoke with my family today, they gave me further details, the mouse
works till they get the windows logon screen, so I assume that something
corrupted the mouse drivers, I advised them to do a restore as they wanted to
do this anyway
just uncertain what the effect would be, as opposed to re-install no format
they wanted a clean system, so I said a restore is the best thing to do.
then update afterwards. I should tell them about WGA and the issues involved
there.

Hi,

Reinstalling is useless if the junk is not cleared off. If they aren't going
to bother cleaning the malware, then they may as well wipe and reload
cleanly. WGA should not be an issue, but if it is an OEM install they need
to be prepared to phone in activation.
