Problem with a Service that Fails to Start (Bonjour Service)

S

Stéphane Bergeron

Hi everyone,

I use Vista Ultimate 64.

For the past few weeks I've been having an issue with an Apple made
service called "Bonjour Service". That service is used in several pieces
of software including iTunes (which I do not use) but also some Adobe
applications (Version Cue for example) and the font management utility I
use which is Extensis Suitcase 11.0.1 for Windows.

Both Version Cue and Suitcase depend on the Bonjour Service to work and
I have had no issues with it for months but recently, the Bonjour
Service stopped working and would not start anymore. It now gives this
error message when trying to start it:

"('Bonjour Service' failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient
privileges to start system services."

My user account is an admin account so privileges is not an issue. I had
made no changes to my system myself before the Bonjour service began to
"refuse" starting but I remember that I installed a few Windows updates
a couple days prior. My machine is always on and I don't re-boot everyday.

So I was wondering if anyone has heard of the issue and knows how I
might fix it or if anyone can give me pointers on how I my start trouble
shooting this and find what started preventing the Bonjour Service from
starting. FWIW, the Windows Firewall is already off and turning off my
anti-virus doesn't help (Eset NOD32).

Thanks very much in advance for any help anyone can provide.

You Might Want 2 Contact Apple About That Problem As That Is A Service That

Windows Service Or Problem, Also Just FYI.

Hi,

I will contact Apple as well but I don't think the issue is theirs on
this one. I had made no change to my machine other than automated
Windows update a little bit before the service stopped working. Then
after a reboot the service just wouldn't start anymore. Something is
preventing it from starting and it may be just one of those security
features "improvements" brought by an update.

If you ever tried to load it on 32bit Vista, you would find out itunes
keeps breaking your CD/DVD drive.

Yeah and some people think it's Vista fault, but it isn't.
When that happens you have to delete from device manager, delete the
upper & lower filters out the registry and reboot.
Some of Pinnacle's software does it too and some others but I can't
remember them right off hand.

You do know the bonjour is the Adobe tracking utility that tracks you
and reports back to Adobe right?
I've disabled it on ever computer that we have it on.

Yes, but that is just a work around. It keeps happening if you have the
problematic software installed. It was enough for my brother to go back
to XP. I think there is no permanent fix for it yet. Why does it
happen? Is it because the effected software like iTunes is not vista
compatible yet?

I think I read some where that it had to do with a conflict created by a
virtual cd/dvd being installed by the 3rd party. Not sure, but once
resolved it has no come up again for us.

Yes, I am fully aware of what Bonjour is and does. But software I rely
on requires it to run and I am willing to live with that. But it won't
start anymore and I need to fix that. I need to find out what happened
that now prevents this service from starting when it worked for months
previously without issue.

Anyone has any idea what may be preventing a service that worked before
from starting now? Any idea where I may look for a cause?

When you go into services and try to start it what error message/number
are you getting?

I am in a admin account so privileges are not an issue or at least were
not before. UAC is off, firewall is off, Defender is on but I give the
service the permissions it asks when I (re)install Bonjour. My AV is
Eset's NOD32.

Vista Ultimate 64, AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+, 4 GB Ram, etc...

Thanks!

I would open iTunes and go to help/updates. I see that that has fixed
the problem for many users. It does appear to be an Apple problem.

As I said in my original post that started the thread, I do not use or
care about iTunes. My problem is with Extensis Suitcase and Adobe
Version Cue. Both depend on the Bonjour service.

I did try to install iTunes because the solution you list is the most
often found in the many Google searches I made but iTunes won't finish
installing because the stupid Bonjour Service won't start. When the
Bonjour Service fails to start the iTunes install rolls back and nothing
gets installed. There's nothing for the Apple updater to update (I had
tried that yes).

The latest standalone Bonjour Service (1.0.4) downloadable installer
won't install either because it fails to start and also rolls back the
install:

http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/bonjourforwindows.html

So I don't think the Apple updater would have worked for me. Which leads
me back to square one. What the hell is preventing that service from
starting?

Well as always, the last resort is to uninstall the Apple software that
is using bonjour and re-install. I wouldn't bother doing an Apple repair
install as in my experience I've never seen it work.

Frank, I mean no disrespect but it's like you're not reading my posts. I
am not talking about Apple software (aside from that stupid Bonjour
Service). I'm talking about Adobe and Extensis software.

Sorry about that Stephane, as I meant Adobe yet typed Apple.
My mistake, although is can be rather confusing seeing as how Apple
Bonjour is a tool used by Adobe Version Cue CS3.
Here is a quote I've seen on goolge about the service, but no reference
to your problem.

"Bonjour is an Apple-developed network-asset-sharing protocol. Given
that Photoshop doesn't support dealing with assets on a network, even
with Bonjour installed, I'm not sure what its point is in a Photoshop
installation. I have never seen any evidence that Bonjour is in any way
contributing to my use of Photoshop -- no Bonjour screens for
discovering network files, printers, etc. Perhaps it's used to discover
Version Cue servers, for those who have a suite installed. According to
Apple's Bonjour for Windows page:

Bonjour for Windows includes a plugin to discover advertised HTTP
servers using Internet Explorer. Click the Bonjour icon in the Internet
Explorer toolbar to enable Bonjour browsing. If you have Bonjour devices
on your local network with embedded HTTP (Web) servers, they will appear
in the list.
The Bonjour Printer Wizard is also included and allows Windows computers
to print to Bonjour networked printers, including USB shared printers
connected to the AirPort Extreme and AirPort Express Base Stations.
Since Apple first launched Bonjour in 2002, every major maker of network
printers has adopted Bonjour. With the Bonjour Printer Wizard, computers
using Windows can also experience the benefits of effortlessly
discovering and printing to these Bonjour printers."
My Bonjour installation from PSCS3 doesn't provide me with the Bonjour
printer wizard or an IE add-in. It's running as a service without any
clients. Pointless."

Could your problem be related to the bonjour printer (if you even have
one)?
Maybe delete it and then try a reinstall.
Sorry that I not coming forth with an exact answer but as I said before,
we don't use bonjour...it's service is disabled on all of our boxes.

I have tried

No problem Frank and thanks very much for trying to help.

No I don't. The only mention of that printer I have seen is when trying
to install the standalone Bonjour. Neither Suitcase nor Version Cue
install that printer.

There's nothing to delete, it won't install. It won't install because it
won't start and the installer rolls back. Like I said, I uninstalled
Suitcase when I was first troubleshooting the issue and Bonjour got
uninstalled with it. I have not been able to re-install it since because
it won't start.

I wouldn't use it either if I had a choice. As far as I can tell, both
Extensis and Adobe use Bonjour for purposes of activation/copy
protection. I could live without Suitcase if I really had to but it
really is the best font manager I've tried and I would rather not. As
for Version Cue, if that is not installed then other components in the
Suite will not work correctly even if it's not used so I really need
Bonjour to work...

Hummm...we use Font Navigator but truthfully, in our current usage of
Vista Ultimate, we do not have to keep switching font groups as we
do/did in Win9x/2K/XP as the number of fonts installed seems to have no
ill effect on Vista at all. We even have one Vista box with 1,600 fonts
install out of our font library of around 40,000 fonts and we can't tell
the difference between it an another Vista box with only 180 fonts
installed.

Also we've seen no ill effect in our installs of Adobe MC CS3 when
bonjour is disabled. Cue seems to be working just fine although you may
be utilizing it for purposes that we are not.

Anyway, I hope you're able to solve your problems with bonjour in the
very near future.
Sorry that I couldn't be of any real help to you.
All the best!

Really? That's good to hear. But the use of a good font manager for me
goes beyond performance isues. For one thing, having thousands of fonts
to sort through in any given app when formatting text would becaome very
tedious very fast for me. I prefer to keep a small subset installed and
turn fonts or groups of fonts on and off as needed.

In the font management utility itself, there are 3 areas that are
important to me. First is a clean uncluttered interface. In that area
Suitcase wins hands down over anything else I tried. Second is automated
font finding and replacement through plugins in key apps. Suitcase has
one for Illustrator and one for InDesign. The only other one I know that
has one too is Proxima FontExpert. But it's Suitcase's FontSense engine
that truly shines here. Finding the right font is not enough, you need
the correct version as well otherwise, text in documents might re-flow
in unexpected and unwanted ways. Suitcase is really the best at that by
far in my experience. The third area and Suitcase for Windows weakness
is search. The Mac version has that down but the Win version lags behind
feature-wise. In most cases, I was willing to live without that because
Suitcase is so strong in the other 2 areas.

But the Bonjour issue forced me to try other font managers. FontExpert
was nice but had all kinds of weird font display issues that even
affected apps using the fonts. I settled on High-Logic MainType (after
trying a bunch) but it lacks any automated font replacement feature but
has very strong categorizing and search features.

I'm waiting on the final release of the Windows version of Linotype's
FontExplorer X which will be free and will have all of the features I'm
looking for:

http://www.linotype.com/2629/fontexplorerxfeatures.html
Also we've seen no ill effect in our installs of Adobe MC CS3 when
bonjour is disabled. Cue seems to be working just fine although you may

If truth be told, CS3 is not the version I have issues with ATM but that
is all I'm at liberty to say ;-)
Anyway, I hope you're able to solve your problems with bonjour in the
very near future.

Yeah, me too... Still waiting on replies from a couple sources.
Sorry that I couldn't be of any real help to you.

That's quite alright and thanks again for trying!
