problem w/ clicking on start button and taskbar

Okay, so I have a Dell Inspiron 4000 w/ Windows XP on it
and it works fine, except that I cannot use the touchpad
to click on the Start button or the tasbar. The Windows
key works sporadically. Clicking on the desktop works
fine. Any ideas? I've already tried unlocking the
taskbar.
