problem upgrading from Windows ME

I have a problem. I had Windows ME installed and tried to
upgrade to XP today. It gets to "Finalizing Installation"
and then hangs with 27 minutes left to go on the install.
Says that it's updating programs and settings when it
hangs. Tried to rollback to ME using "osunist.exe" in
windows\system32 folder but says I can't in DOS. I can't
get to Safe Mode in XP as it is still installing and says
that setup can't run in Safe Mode. How can I get rid of XP
at this point and go back to ME? Nothing I do will boot
into XP and it keeps going back to the same point in setup
where it hangs. PLEASE HELP! Thank you in advance to

Ok this might help, or may not. I am no expert. I recently had an issue
with this. Basically in dos I had to copy damaged files from the system 32
folder toa temp fol;er and then delete them in the suystem 32 folder. Then
copy the files from the repair folder and put in the system 32. Search
google for windows repair and you might get some help. Sorry that the best
